Next year (08) will be my first year farming on my own. (80 acres) which will be planted to corn in 07 (this spring). I had planned on sticking with the rotation but corn looks a lot more profitable right now (can lock that in w/ options) For corn on corn I'll need to get it black but I don't want dirt blowing all over and was thinking of switching the bottoms on reg old plow to mini moldboards - if any one has used these before I'd like to know how much hp / bottom is needed and do I need to disc before using it. any other info would be great - Thanks!!

Ok, to start out with, how big is your tractor and plow? It depends on the condition of your plow. If it is an old one that is pretty woreout, just take a cutting torch and cut off some till it looks like the one your looking at. If it is in good shape and you want to keep it to do some real plowing with, then try to find another to play with. What are you going to do to stalks before you try this? Older plows do not have much clearence and will plug up. You may have to chop stalks or disk 2 times to get thru the trash. Might be better off to see if a neighbor has a chisel plow you could rent to work ground. I agree, you need to leave some trash on top, Check with FSA and make sure plowing won't ban you from getting farm payments ( HEL ground). What do you have for a planter? Older planters with runners instead of disk openers don't like trash very much, so you could have a problem come planting time. Lots of thinge to consider. Chris

i saw them in the shoups catalog. it says it takes less hp to pull them compared to a standard moldboard and it leaves some trash on the surface. i never used one before but it does look interesting. still tough tho looking at the fields with all the trash on the surface. i miss chopping stalks and moldboard plowing. fields looked a lot tidier the old way.
