Went and looked at a IH 27 bailer last night for sale, complete with manual and original reciept. It's been stored inside its WHOLE life and came off a small farm originally. The current owner (2nd) bailed 1000 bales a year with his Moline R , and it works fine. He has owned it since '77, but hasnt used it every year. He draged it out, "went through it" greased it, and used it a few years ago,and there it sat till last year when he used it one last time. It looks good, and when I turn everything, its nice and tight, no slop in anything. He also has a maintence chart, since he owned it. Whats it worth maybe at auction ? I want a small bailer, IF the price is right. He wants $500, I want to give him $350. What do you all think? AC

If it is in as good a shape as you say, why not just buy it for the $500.00 ?

There is nothing wrong with a 27 baler. This is the smallest capacity baler that IH made in that timeframe. They also made a 37 and 47.

If the baler gives you any problems with the knotters, the problem is most likely the twine knife (must be sharp) or the duck bill (wears through the chrome and rusts after a lot of bales). These knotters are easy to work on and adjust as long as you can read a book. The adjustment book is still available and is very helpful.

I bought my 37 about 7 years ago and make 600 to 1000 bales a year. I replaced the twine knives when I bought it, adjusted according to the book and have not touched it since. It does not miss a bale, ever. I still have my gandads 46 that he and Dad used to custom bale with. I know I can take it to the feild and not miss a bale.

Josh, not sure what planet you are on, but CNH still supplies just about any part that you would want for this baler. Any JD that you get for under $500 is not going to be any better of a baler than the IH. The NH balers may have better knotters, but you better enjoy loose banna bales. I have little use for the old NH.

Its not worth $500, maybe not worth $100. For $500 I'd look for an older NH or JD, parts are available, they are easy to work on, and they work well when adjusted. IH balers had a pretty bad reputation around here, there are some in fence rows but I don't know of any in use.

I would have agreed until he said the second owner " bailed 1000 bales a year" with it.
Now I'm just confused. Maybe it's a new way to move the bales.
A square bailer should work well in flat bottom boat.
