Make sure the right hand end guard rides tight on the sickle, else it will plug. It takes a shim to fit right there and that's easily missed when that guard is replaced.

Watch for the pressure links bowing out and chewing on the main drive belt.

That main pitman oscillates on a pair of tapered roller bearings, and is very quiet when they are in good shape and loaded properly.

IH sold it too, or Case seems like they called it a 489 or 789. That's on the cover of my parts book which is at the barn about 8 miles from here. Whether they could come up with parts I don't know.

The sickle head won't last as long as the sections.

If you lay the windrow out as wide as possible and rake before baling, you will bale a day sooner.

Bale the narrow windrow the same direction mowed and it will come up 100%.

Joe's got it right! Keep checking the pitman connection bolts, especially down at the wobble box. They come loose easy and make a mess if they come out. Stay out of wet hay, it'll really plug up there.
I keep a 5' bar with to turn the rollers back when it plugs up...and it will.

I've used one for 15 years now. Will plug up easier than some cutters. Sickles are expensive.
Make sure the pitman drive is kept tight or it will beat itself to death. If the sicle binds it will tear up too. The ones with the u joints on the pitman are the later ones and hold together better. The early one had the ball and socket joints.
