I pulled a 605A Vemeer for years with my 460D. I have pulled my 605F with it but it needs a little more power. 605E is good what ever you get get an open throat. Any 504 Vemeer would work good, F Super F on up will make good bales.

If by "efficiency" you mean do the horses waste a lot of hay?

Yes they do!

If you mean is it easier to put out one large round bale with a front end loader, once a week, in spite of the ice or mud or whatever, instead of struggling with a larger number of small squares on a DAILY basis, No it osn't!

Large round bales, of good quality grass and alfalfa or clover mixture, stored inside, are excellent sources of hay for horses.

Round bales, stored outside, with considerable spoilage are not good hay sources for horses, even though they may feed cattle perfectly well!

I've fed hay to horses since about 1963, and I know what they'll eat. We switched to large round bales three years ago and it's worked out very well!

feeding horses round bales of hay is very inefficent and dangerous if its feed outside. get you a good used square baler and keep the round baler as a back up in case it looks like rain and you have to use it. in n al right now sq baled hay for horses is bringing about 10.00 bucks and if the drought continues it will be worth 15 by jan

I would disagree with it being dangerous to feed horses round bales. I have done it for over 20 years with no problems. If a horse cannot handle being fed that way, he needs to go to the killers anyway. That way you can get a real horse.

The simple matter of "feeding horses" is in itself inefficient. :>)

605C Vermeer / 560 MF is a cheap reliable baler, takes a little practice but makes decent bales.

I was looking at a vermeer to hook to my 50 horse JD tractor. I feed round bales to my horse...but I pay someone every year to bale it. I thought I might try to do it myself. I think that if I can offset the cost of the equipment in 5-7 years...then it's worth it. Plus, I've just always wanted to bale my own hay instead of relying on someone else.

Any comments?
