I'm considering making a purchase of a grader blade or box scraper with scarifier shanks to maintain my 400 foot long gravel drive. Which is better..an adjustable grader blade or a box scraper with the shanks? I have a 1977 Leyland 154 w/ 3pth.
Thanks!

I have a six foot heavy duty box blade and Dad has a home made eight foot adjustable grader blade. I use both of them behind my WD Allis on a 3-point. This is what I have learned.

It kind of depends what exactly you want to do to the drive. Just for smoothing ruts and wash boards I think that a good grader blade set to an angle is easier to control. Not quite as prone to dig in and cause the low spots to get lower and the high spots to get higher as the back wheels go over humps. Grader blades are also nice for working on ditches. Most of them can be reversed and used like a light duty dozer blade. If your drive is on a hill and prone to wash down the hill a box blade is a great tool to drag material back where it belongs. Or if you have piles of gravel or dirt that you want to smooth out the box blade will be a better choice in my opinion. With the scarifying teeth a box blade will dig into hard packed material and break it up enabling you to move it around were a grader blade would be more apt to skip across the top. I think if I had to choose between the two I would go for the box blade first. Then I would start looking around for a used grader blade as they seem to be more readily available on the used market. Which ever way you go don't get a unit that is too light duty for your machine or you will just end up tearing it up. And yet if you get one too large it will be very frustrating to keep moving without stalling out or spinning the wheels.

Forgot to add that the reason I think a box blade is better to move material from point A to point B is that the material doesn't run around the edges like it does on a grader blade.
