Hello Everyone.

I recently purchased a couple of JD #5 mowers to mount up behind my Farmall M. One of them is is pretty good shape, the other is passable, but Ill end up using it as a parts mower.
However, the one that I want to use looks like it has a bad oil seal behind the flywheel that the pittman arm mounts to. How big of a job is it to replace a bad oil seal there? It might just be that the mower wasnt used all that much and with some use maybe the seal will swell, but I dont want to just let it leak.
Any input is much appreciated!

~Bug

Thanks for the input Rich.

When I get a chance to tinker, Ill go see what I can do with it. Hopefully all goes smoothly, and Ill have a nice, non-leaking mower when Im all said and done!
If I need more help, Ill be back...

Thanks for the advice Rich. Ill call ahead and have one of my brothers start to lube that sucker up for me before I get a chance to work on it. Hopefully I can tackle that while Im working on my machinery in a couple of weekends... I have lots lined up at this point (potential clutch job on my M, not fun) so this should just get me prepped for it.

Its probably a foolish question, but does the shaft that drives the flywheel have to come out also? Or can I replace the seal around it?

No,the shaft does not come out. I have read articles about people that have had to pull the shaft with the flywheel on it and then put it in a press to get the flywheel off. To get the shaft out with the flywheel on you would have to go in through the rear of the gear box. To get my key stock out I drilled a tiny hole in the end then tapped it out. I made a puller out of flat bar and attached it with a screw. When the flywheel is off the plate holding the seals unbolts from the gear box and slides off the shaft. Archives has much info also. Post back if you need help.

OK, so then its not too big of a deal then, at least from everyone elses take....

I have some Kroil that Ill put on there first, try to pull that key, pop the flywheel off, remove the cap and shims, and then somehow get the seal out, right?

Or am I missing a crucial step in there? third party image

I sprayed mine for about a week before I took it apart. Like I said the key stock is the tricky part. Then tap the flywheel off, after the cover is off the seal will knock right out. I used two seals in mine.

You want to spray it with PB blaster or your favorite penetrating oil a few days in advance. Really give it a good soaking. Getting the key out is the worst part.

Bug,

I pull the tapered key that's in there with a vise grip. I drive the pulley off a little and then grab the key with the vise grip and tap the wheel back on a little.

Not that hard to do. Bought one at local dealer recently and it is fairly easy to take off the flywheel and install the seal.
