I have been working on my NH 271 for a while now and have gotten decent bales. Can anyone tell me how to take the plunger out because it has some bad berings on it and I need to remove it. Does it come out the front or the rear of the amchine? I can't find a service manual for it and the owners manual does not tell me much. Thank you.

Thank you for all your help. Now the trickie part will be doing the work. Bt it has to be done since one of the bearings is completly worn out..... got to put in new knives and also hay stops and get a spring for hay dogs along with some new twister parts..... Paid 400 for it and right now it does make good bales but needs some work to make it tip top again..... ..Father in law thinks i am CRAZY for spending more money on it when it already makes good bales but I want to keep it making good bales 20 years into the future..... ...thanks again

It comes out thru the rear. Remove the hay wedges and block up the hay dogs, unbolt the pitman, making sure the feeder forks are clear of the plunger and pull it out the back.

There are 10 special ball bearings on the plunger. Get them from NH. Most are held in place on a split shaft with a tapered allen screw. Remove the allen screw, using a little heat if necessary and the bearings should come off the shafts easily.

A book will be helpful when replacing the plunger and adjusting the clearances. Try eBay or CNH Publications @ 800-635-4913

Good luck,
Scott

Haven't pulled one out of a 270, but we did one on a 68. It is alittle work. We did the wooden slides on the 68 years ago, but I remember that anything that could get in the way IE hay dogs ect ect had to come off the baler. Take all the tension off it of and give it hell. In our case we had to use a come along to get the plunger out and back into the baler.
