Weighting a disc harrow?

I have a little mounted disc harrow like this:

It works fine with my MF135 but it doesn't penetrate the ground as much as I'd like, only a couple of inches. We're on heavy clay with not much topsoil. Would adding some weight to it help? I'm thinking of strapping a couple of logs onto it, and if that works maybe going for something a bit more permanent.

Comments, suggestions, do's, don'ts?

David

have you looked at getting a tool bar with a couple of chisel plow points and put them on it. that would work your ground up better than a disk and then use your disk after that. even a one point submositure plow would be better.

My tractor easily lifts a mower weighing 500 lbs, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks everyone for confirming that it's usual to add weights. I'll do some experiments.

Will depend on how much aditional weight capacity that tractor has, too heavy and it will either not lift it off the ground or the front end will come up. Weight will help if it doesen't do one of the things I mentioned.

I saw one at an auction this morning that had a 55 gallon drum mounted on top of the frame. (Laid over on it's side) Owner could fill it with as much water as needed to get the weight he needed. Open a petcock and drain it when weight NOT needed. Also used to caddy water to his garden. Not the answer for everyone, but not a bad idea at that.

This is a dynamite idea. With a little ingenuity, a person could rig up a 12 volt spray rig on top of the disk and spray weed killer while he is breaking up the ground. This would eliminate an additional pass across the field and put the killer right in on the roots of the weeds as they are being disked. Seems to me that it would be more effective to get the killer to the roots instead of applying topically. Anybody see anything wrong with this idea?

I used to chain a 300# steel pile driver head on our double 9' drag type disc. Behind this I'd hook a cultipacker and a spike tooth harrow. I pulled this with an AC D17 and it did a very good job in ground preparation.

As the others said.. just about anything you can chain up to it for weight. Concrete plugs, old rr track section.. old engine block / head that is useless.. etc.. I have seen an old tractor rim+tire+center laying on one too.

I have one that size = added a cement block about 200 lbs. and it made it cut better.

We used to chain on a railroad ties for weight and it worked ok.
