What do you think about a NI 323 corn picker?

My recent trip to the Half-Century of Progress show has sparked my interest in getting a corn picker. One of my Grandpa's friends that was working there had his Unstyled JD A with a 1-row New Idea corn picker. (steel wheels and work clothes, if you saw that one there) I have a 1937 JD A and the 323 NI 1-row seems to be avaiable in my area. What are your opinions on this machine? Is it likely that the 323 was the model that I saw working at the show? It seemed to work pretty smoothly and match the A well.

Thanks

Had a 323. Glad its gone. Went ot a 324, then switched to narrow rows and combining (6 rows). Like the other poster said, plugs in dry corn. Also shelled way too much off the cob. Didn't do that good a job of husking. And the snouts are easy to bend back or break off. And its a 1 row... but since you want it to go with a JD A, that part isn't a problem. Every 323 I've seen uses a hyd. cylinder, but you could figure out something else to use in place of the cylinder for adjusting the height. Doesn't have to hold much weight. Yes, SOME parts are available for the 323, but more and more are becoming 'No Longer Serviced'.

I have never had any plugging or shelling problems with my 323. If a New Idea is plugging up or pulling corn up by the roots it needs new pins put in the snapping rollers. Picks fine in dry or casey fodder.

Maybe I should have said plugs when it's cold. Biggest problem I had with plugging was when the stalks were real brittle- either from being very dry or very cold (like below 0). Tassles, leaves, and the upper parts of the stalk would break off and, if enough got into the elevator, plugged it. Only rarely had trouble with the snapping rolls plugging, but it did happen now and then. Also had trouble with the apron under the husking rolls plugging. Solved that by cutting part of the tin off the bottom to let the husks out easier- too many got carried back around on the apron. Grandpa bought that picker new. He never picked more than 30-40 acres a year (often less), so it wasn't worn out when I took over the farm.

Never picked any under 0 out, but I have picked late season and dry with no problems. Had a sorry crop one year with lots of nubbins and they would cause troble sometimes. Got an old 2 row mounted Super Picker and it will pick circles around the JD 300 I bought new. Best one I ever seen picking is a 234 IH mounted picker. In good corn you can't keep it hauled away from it.

323 is nice to look at. If you plan to take a picker to the field to use, try to find an International 1-PR.

I tend to agree with wolfman's assessment. I had 2 of the 1PR pickers. One earlier one and one real late one. They were both very good machines. The 323 I had was a plugging nightmare in dry corn. I sold it after 2 seasons. Either the IH or NI pickers would be a good match behind the old A JD. I now use a JD 300 husker. Now, that's a picker! But, it's way too much machine for a John Deere A.

Why would he want a picker that he can't find the first part for. Parts are still available to some extent for New Ideas. Have picked for years with a 323 and they don't come any better.

323 is one of the later pickers. It is a top notch picker.
