We have an old Corsicana bush hog. Maybe some of ya'll from Texas may have heard of them. They don't make them anymore. It belonged to my father-in-law and I don't know how old it is, but if the tractor can get over it, it will cut it. I've seen saplings with 3 inch trunks chopped right off. We have put that thing through the mill and its still going. We've had some repair work done on the deck basically due to hard use, but nothing to the gear box or blades. We run it behind a Ford 2810 and ocasionally behind our JD 70 diesel. P.S.- It will take out an angry water mocassin in a heart beat! Score - Corsicana 3, snakes - 0

gonna find out if Tiger, the roadside mower company, makes a good machine. have only put 5 hours on it, and found some rocks the hard way so need to patch some holes in the deck. too bad it's permanently attatched to the tractor, not so useful that way.

i do know the discbine will cut it...big stuff won't make it and shouldn't go past the conditioner though. one time found a t post the hard way, it didnt harm the machine, but the post sure looked sad. i wonder how the disc mowers without a conditioner would cut in brush.

Guys, Say what you will, But if the shredder you choose doesn't have the steel in the frame or the deck and HIGH HP Gear boxes you are just Farting in the wind!!! There is NO substitute for strength. So that said here goes.....
Best 7 ft shredder,,,,,Old Jhn Deere 227 built around 1960, as close to indestructable as they come. I finely twisted out the square keyway on the input shaft where the slipclutch mounts. Only after clearing too many acres of central Texas Cedar, ranging in height from 1ft to 10 ft tall with multi-trunks. OBTW I pulled this shredder with my 966 IH.
15 ft Batwing,,,,, Rhino SR-15M. 200 hp gearboxes, with frame and decks to match. Again clearing and Cedar eradication, same specs as above. The only weak point on the shredder is not really the shredder it is the blade bolts shearing or the blade bolthole ripping out. I dare say if any one else out there requires as much from a shredder as I do!... Simply put if the tractors goes over it, the shredder had better handle it and spit it out thew back, period! I pull this shredder with a John Deere 4230.
Only maintance is slack off the slip clutches during the winter, in the spring run the shredder just a little to loosen up and free up the disc. Re tighten, service the machine and away you go. Later,
John A.

Hands down Bush Hog. No other mower made is as good. I have an old BMB that has been the best one I ever had, but are no longer made. I agree with the the kyhayman about the Rhino's, and King Kutter has never built a mower to compare with a Bush Hog. You get what you pay for when it comes to mowers.

I've got a 15' BH, heavy duty and an ancient 8' sidewinder. Both are good tough mowers. Biggest heap o junk I had was a Rhino.

Kyhayman, what was it that you did not like about the Rhino's ? Just curious, about anything to know about them. I've seen the newer line on their site, they claim to have the heaviest gear boxes on those large batwing types, but who knows until you actually put one to work.

I've been running an old SE-6, might be a prior 90's model. Suprisingly, it's not been much trouble, I'm not doing a lot of acres with it but, I have reclaimed some areas, that have overgrown with the rest of the place, some brush, goldenrod, and high grasses etc.

It's interesting to hear the comments on the various brands, one thing that is important is to have the book for your mower, good blades and properly adjusted to the tractor for the kind of mowing to be done, I've spent a lot of time fooling with mine after I got a factory book off ebay, 1 page in the operation section made a huge difference in how effective it cuts and seems to make a difference on fuel consumption too. I did an acre of grass with it, new blades, properly adjusted, big difference in performance.

Wow, I was just out looking at a Rhino and I thought it looked pretty good. I thought the tube for the tailwheel would standup better than the way bushhog does it now with the two straps. What went wrong on the rhino? We have a bushhog that needs replaced since it is rusting through the deck for the second time.

I bought it new, 15' in 1991. Did a good job for a couple of years. The one I had used a single gear box on the center section to drive both the center section cutting blades and divide power to the two wing gear boxes. I couldnt, for the life of me, keep that center gear box in it. Usually once or twice a year I would have to work on it. Repalced it completely 3 times with brand new ones (1500 bucks). Also had problems with the wheel attachements to the deck

Thanks for the info. I am just looking at a standard 5 or 6 foot. Just cant justify it since the old one is "still going", and a new one wont make me any additional money or reduce labor...

You mean none of you has ever owned a Deere? Dad has had a 709 since '76 and its still going. I couln't imagine one made much tougher. It has seam welds instead of spot welds which even Bush Hog isn't doing on their heavy duty models to date. He also has a 1508 that has been great. Everyone with the new double-deckers has had great luck as well. You will pay more but that 709 says its money well spent.

Years ago we had a Massey Ferguson shredder that was the best I've used. We were running side by side with a Ford and it was a lot tougher.
I saw a Servis brand shredder a few years ago at an equipment sale, it was easily the most heavy duty 5' cutter I've ever seen. It was well used but the body was so heavy, it had virtually no dents in the side. I would have bought it but I didn't think my JD 850 would pick it up.

Kinda depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you are doing "push it over and chew it up brush busting" a tire drive Sidewinder with dull blades is very hard to beat. The tire drive protects the tractor driveline and tranny from shock loads and the dull blades leave the stumps like a chewed up toothpick for a sure kill and no regrowth. If you are mowing pastures and making things look pretty, most anything with a sharp blade will git 'er done. Run the deck a little higher in the back; more if you are cutting a huge volume of growth. A common new operator mistake in running a brush hog is too fast a ground speed.

I Have seen cheap Bushhog and cheap Howse as well. Their bottom of the line models are not as good as some of the king Kutters that I have looked at. I have seen lawn mowers with thicker deck material than MyBushhog brand. But then I did not pay as much for it,a ten footer,as guys are payibg for lawn mowers.

I don't know anything about either. I have a New Holland that is older than I am (50) and I am still trying to wear it out. I am at least the 3rd owner...my uncle croaked and left it to me, and he bought it used. I replaced the gear box seal last year and other than blades...it soldiers on!

I would have to agree with you. I think Brush Hog or Howse is top of the line. I think the the poorest quality brush hog I have seen was King Kutter

We bought a King Kutter 5' 3-point brush hog about 10 years ago. I have nothing but good things to say about it. It sees a fair amount of use in the summer months, but it is not abused. I would buy another one without any reservations! I also like the fact that the sides are made from I-beam instead of stamped steel. I don't know how well it would hold up to commercial abuse though. I swear there are monkeys out there that could tear up a crowbar with a rubber hammer!
