I found a old side delivery hay take. iam unsure of whay modle it is ,it looks like a IH #5 maybe.it has two tires on the front drive wheels they are rubber and two dolly wheels in the rear rubber also. it apears to of been red and blue originally. any way, do you think this rake would be a good deal for $100.00 it will be for light use and do you think parts would be had to find? It works now just not sure if it will do a good job or would I be better off looking for a newer model I would guess this is from the 50,s ?
Thanks. if you have any pictures plese post them I would be interested in your opinions and pics. Thanks

Earlier this year I was using a newer NH rake and hit a woodchuck hole. Everything seemed to still be working fine for the next 20 feet and then the gearbox split in half. She wa sall done.

Having 30 acres of hay still left to rake I headed home to call a local dealer to rent a rake. On the way I noticed an old rake out in the middle of a field, didn't look pretty but I figured that if it would get the rest of the field done it didn't matter.

The rake was an old John Deere and the man that owned it said it worked fine when he parked it there 8 years ago. The tires were flat, but what the heck.. I hooked it to my truck and engaged the gears and everything seemed to work. He said for $50 I could take it home with me. I gave him the $50 pulled it to the hay field...tires flopping and all. I was able to rake the rest of the 30 acres with this old rake and had no issues at all.

Those old tires look like 6"x36" and are identical to the ones on my antique Myers orchard sprayer.

I rake hay with an OLD Steel wheeled JD 4 bar rake When I got it from my dad, the main bull gear had a few stripped teeth in it that was gone whioch caused it to not rake. I welded new teeth to the gear some 20 years ago and it still works fine, BUT I grease it HEAVY

Someone asked about how and where I welded up the teerth. It dosent sound like we got the same problem. Mine would not rake hay anywhere in the field, not just the corners, but anywhere in the field, That was because that when the bar lowest to the ground did hit the ground, the teeth in the bull gear, the big gear that drives each gear on each bar had shered a few teeth, I pulled the rake till those teeth was on too inbetween the 2 gears on the 2 top bars, run rags in and around the teeth to see what I had, then just took the welder and ran it along what was left of each tooth, doing one at a time so as to allow each weld to cool, and keep building it up with Adams hard faceing rod. The teeth, I am guessing on each of the bars was somewhat worn too, worn enough to take the welded teeth in stride. I greased it GOOD and went to work. I did not remove the gear to do the welding.

A rake that works for $100?! What are you waiting for? When it pooches on you, it pays for itself on scrap steel price.
