Is there a plow I can use to make some trenches to bury my sprinkler pipe, out on a pasture, about a foot deep? Pipe is 2" around. I think someone referred to a potato plow, but I am not sure. Also, I bought a disk plow the other day that has two sets of disks of decreasing size from the middle (about 24" then 20" then 16")...it is said to be used for making a levy...and that it does great. They guy who sold it to me said he thought you could swap the disks to the opposite sides (a chore!) and it would make a ditch (trench, whatever). That didn't work so well, but I may need to adjust it. Any ideas?

If you arn't going to put in a lot of line and don't mind a little manual labor(or have a few kids) Take a one shank ripper and put a twisted shank on it--like on a soilsaver chisel plow. Pull that through, then take a pick and clean out the trench. It'll only be half full and the dirt in it will be loose and comes out easily with a pick. This may not work as good in sandier ground, but its worth a try and will save you from building a boot for the shank.

Matt,
I've got what we always called a hillside plow. It's a single bottom "two-way trip" plow. Basically it lets you plow on a hillside by going back and forth. Mine is a 16 inch plow, so if you "plow backwards" with it, thowing the dirt out of the fer, you can make a pretty good ditch. It should make all the ditch you want and would keep you from having to "manufacture" anything, but what's the fun in that? Hope this helps a little. Casey

Get yourself a single shank subsoiler and weld a sleeve on the back of it. Use it to rip a track progressively deeper and then run your pipe through it. I've put in many miles of pasture water line with this setup and an 8N. Good Luck. Tom

Tom how do you keep it from kinking the poly pipe. Maybe curve the bottom back on the sleeve??That sounds kind of like the way they put cable down around here.

Burrhead: Exactly. We made the sleeve in an extended 'S' shape looking at it from the side. The 8N had enough oof to put it down if we went over the same track about three times. Then we put it on the Super 6 County and just idled along in low gear and did it in one go. This was with an old Killefer steel wheel subsoiler. Worked OK for what we needed then but won't do it anymore. Now we roll the pipe up in the fall and set it out in the spring rather than bury it. We couldn't get it deep enough to guard against freezing. I suppose we could have used a backhoe and put it down about three feet..... .... We could have done a lot of things but I stick a kid on the wagon with a cable spool and we gather it up every fall now.

That sounds good. Thanks for the info. I still need to put out about 4000'. It does'nt freeze here but the cattle will tear it up if you leave it on top of the ground.

I'll try the way you're talking about, I've been using a middle buster then a blade and shovel, and that is too much work and goes too slow.

This might be kinda hard to 'see' if you are new to farm stuff, but a good way to go. What you are making is a small version of a 'tile plow'. Look up 'tile plow' in a search engine & you should find info on the big one's that take 200 hp and put in 6" tile 6 feet deep. Then build yourself a little version.

You don't want to use that hiller to dig a ditch, but it will hill up garden rows really good.

The best thing would be a middle buster for a ditch. That may be what the other feller was calling a potato plow, they dig taters real good.

You'll have alot of shoveling to do because it won't flip all the dirt out of your way when you go that deep.
