Hello, I'm new to theses forums and to farming. I am interested in making hay on the small farm I have and am collecting the necessary implements. Rakes are expensive here (central KY) but I found a New Idea hay rake for $400. Needs a little TLC but in fair shape. I dont know what model it is but it is belt driven and uses steel cables for the lift. My questions are; any guess at the model and age? are parts readily available and who has them? (It needs a belt at least). Is this a decent hay rake and is the price fair? All answers very much appreciated. I will probably have many more. Thanks again, great to be here.

Rob

Wow. Thanks to all for your replies. Many interesting points have been brought up and I will have to take some time to ponder them. Choosing a rake is like skinning a cat...many different ways. Guess I will know the best way to go when I see it. I have another question but might be best to start a new topic. Again, thanks for your help.

Rob

I have 2 of the belt driven rakes. That is all I use to bale about 100 acres a year. Simple design, easy to work on. Belts cost $100 at a NI dealer and should last 25 years. Not high tech but gets the job done. Hooks up and unhooks in seconds.

I don't know that rake, but I pretty much lump all those old side deliveries into one category. They're all pretty simple. Teeth are basic. Belts are common at an industrial supply. The rest is just patching and welding...
The NH wouldn't be worth a dime more to me since I hate them all equally. I have a NH 56, and it breaks too. Just get one in good shape that you can buy right and don't worry about the color.

I have found wheel rakes to work better. If you have smooth level fields a 3ph rake will do fine, but on bumpy land they don't flex enough and break teeth. The models on wheels work better. You can run the wheel rake as fast as you can sit on the tractor. No gear boxes or belts to maintain.

In 1958 we bought a NI rake and it had the gear box/shaft drive. They converted to the belt drive sometime in the mid-late sixties. We used that rake for 35 years without any repairs (except tires) until we sold the home farm equipment. I assume it is still working today. I agree the NH is a mighty fine rake, but unless you are making a lot of hay, that NI will work fine. AGCO owns NI, so check with the local dealer and see if he carries NI parts. Not all AGCO dealers have a contract to carry NI parts.

Having been there and done that, here's my advice. Bite the bullet and get a New Holland 56 ,256, or 258 ,they are around for $900 to $1500 in decent shape.Take care of it and it will still be worth the same 2 or 10 years from now. They are the Cadillac of rakes

I have a new holland 256 that I bought new in 1987. I have replaced maybe 1/3 of the teeth qand have raked probably 5000 acres. I had to replace the left hand frame due to some one turning the tractor into it. Keep it greased every time I use it and if baling all day will stop after 5 - 6 hours and regrease.
