To EveryOne of you, a Very BIG THANKS... Lots of Helpful info. I feel driving a very OLD USED combine 50 miles, that I have had NO personal experiance with, is asking for UN-NEEDED trouble. And I have almost NO BACKUP help if I have trouble driving it and it breaks down. I did drive a Farmall 350 64 miles back here last Spring but that is small and could be pulled with even a heavy car, if needed. The various comments about pulling it the 50 miles home is interesting. The roadway is VERY good with wide shoulders. Without a manual I did NOT know about disconnecting the tranny. The weather here in SW MN hopefully will stay snow free for a few more weeks. I'll keep looking for a "loboy" type trailer to carry the whole thing as first choice and pulling it backward as 2ed choice. I'll get back to it later this week to start and drive it some more (after fixing a few more things) It's a little more on the heavy side then I thought. Needless to say I have a hobby farm and it'll be just the right size if I can make this all work out. I am new in this area so my contacts are few but you guys are a VERY big help. Thanks again... agpilot

Hello Alex-41JDb: Ya know... towing it home backwards is starting to sound better... I gotta crawl under it next time I am over there and see how hard it is to disconnect the tranny as was mentioned earlier.. I sure wish the Dealers could have gotten a manual for this early of a unit. I am the type to actually look stuff up in the manual. I'd like flashing warning lights too.. Thanks Alex. agpilot

You won't find anything in any manual about transporting a combine backwards, or unhooking the drives from the transmission. That's just a common sense sort of thing. Don't have to crawl under anything to unhook- the couplers are on each side of the machine, about thigh high.

Hello JMS/MN: No crawling under it? OK... I am planning on driving back there to do some misc fixing on it in 2 or 3 days. I will take a look. No I didn't expect a manual to explain how to pull it backwards since the Gleaner Company LAWYER would pull his hair out due to Libility. But I'd expect an exposed diagram of the drive train from which one could see what could be done. I'll look for couplers on each side. Thanks JMS/MN. .agpilot

I'm near New Ulm - so howdy distant neighbor. I had an F, not a diesel F2. Mind saying where about you are?

You will make Mountain Lake dealership your friend - they support the old Gleaners very well, & have a bone-yard to pick bigger parts off of.

I would drive it, but I do understand your hesitations.

Hello --->Paul: I see you aren't too far away. I am just up on Buffalo Ridge in East Pipestone county. I'd drive it pronto IF I had lots of backup help following... but I don't have almost anybody, so I'll keep looking for a trailer. Thanks for the mention of backup parts in New Ulm. I tend to go that way when heading back to the Twin Cities now and then. Almost all farms are running behind on harvest and late tillage in this area because of all the rain. That means nobody wants to even consider hauling anything. I'll also have to find a manual because the Dealers can not get copies for anything with this low of a serial number.(F-2690) ...I'll check New Ulm 4 manuals. . With all the rain we had I am thinking early snow and I would like it moved befor snow. Thanks again Paul.... and everyOne else... agpilot

Dealership is in _Mountain Lake_. Midway is the name of the place, north side of Mountain Lake. The Redwood Falls dealer is good too.

Nothing actually in New Ulm. Other than me, skating on the mud, trying to get crop out. What a year! Sheez.

I'll have to look at the serial # of my old parts F. It was a 1968 model. Thinking it was 5000 something.

Good machines, if you are mechanical at all, pretty easy to do the work on them yourself.

Hello --->Paul: Thanks again for the Dealers name and location. The serial number on this appears to be F-2690 and the 90 is hard to read but only 4 digits. So it's an early model F. Yes I could see that it was not as complicated to work on as the newer machines. Also not as big which makes it harder for one person to handle with limited tools. I've had Crawlers and a backhoe, skidsteer loader etc and maintained them all. Not that I wanted to but I grew up on a farm and fixing things yourself was always expected. Hope your drying out some this week with our sunny weather... Thanks again. .agpilot

Hello --->Paul: Yes I did own a small crop spraying business in Montana years ago. Those wide open fields of Winter wheat are ment for airplanes rather then the smaller MN fields. I also did a Spring wheat area in ND as well. I haven't flown in years but this hobby farm has a 2200 foot long hay field that will have an airstrip down the center soon. (This hobby farm is my retirement to get back to 3 Old Farmall tractors and a grass airstrip and a small Winnebago... so far.) I am thinking of ultralight powered gliders because this Buffalo Ridge area is hilly and lends itself to that type of sport flying. Thanks for your help Paul. Agpilot

Friend/coworker of my wife built a small exp plane. Sold it this past year, he is working on a scale version of a Mustang that he hopes to have flying in a year or 2. Probably 2 or 3. He's over by Sleepy Eye.

'Nother friend just turned his strip into a crop field a couple years ago. He has too many hobbies, couldn't get back to getting a plane; (I think) his dad had a plane & did some flying. He was kinda sad about giving up the strip, but 10 acres of rent vs 10 acres of weedy grass that he didn't need..... ;)
