Hello all: The first year Gleaner model F had what engine? It looks like a big G.M. six cylinder. Late 1950's means a 292 cube? Another old guy I talked to also thinks they used the big truck six cylinder gas. No manual YET so what do some of the people here say that 6 cylinder engine is? The fuel pump was dead and the NAPA parts man can't match the dead one I took to him.(yet).. Thanks much... agpilot

Hello all... Again. There is a link to another attempt to restore a Combine. It was in 1999 by "The Red" John Fritz. He was often on the Farmall forum. This link (it better work) was to YTMag as a story about his John Deere 4400 Restoration attempt. This store can be accessed on the left coloum under Articles--> Implements. My link: www.ytmag.com/articles/artint158.htm Thanks.. agpilot

Hello ALL: Wow... These forums at YTMag have the most helpful people. I got the old pump out and have asked NAPA and other auto parts around here and no match yet... I was also looking at the GM-Chevy strainght six History in WIKIPEDIA (The online excylopedia) and it was interesting. It said the 292 didn't start untill 1963. There was a 261 from 1954 to 1962. There was a link to another website where it mentioned that in Gen Motors there was often engines "sold" to another company or another GM Division and all they did was rate it at ONE cubic inch larger size all tho NOTHING in the engine was different. It was their way of letting people know which engine to use as a cross-reference. (It also adds to confusion to non-GM people) Soo... selling Alis Chalmers a 261 could be labled a 262. (I have been asking NAPA to check 262 fuel pumps too). I'll be going back Saturday to do some more minor fixing and re-install some kind of a fuel pump. People that restore old machines and cars etc have to expect hard to get parts as part of the job.. I still think (hope) this one doesn't need too much since all chains and belts and sprockets still look like they had low usage. I just hope to try and get the really expensive items like the drive train checked out much more before real cold weather hits MN. Thanks again guys. Agpilot. (PS -->Paul: I explained agpilot history to you in last Gleaner string)

I have a 55 chev 2 ton with a 261 6 cyl. in it and I got a new fuel pump at an auto supply. It would fit more than one engine but I don't remember the numbers. It works just fine so must be right one.

Got it - replied there.

I didn't want to confuse you with the AC engine on my old parts combine - I know most of them were GM gas motors, but some of the early years were AC engines. Second engine in that one, the first one started running rough, pushed in the clutch, & it went 'boom' real loud & everything was quiet but the combine cylinder spinning down.

A main bearing turned, rod went through the oil pan, mechanic thought he could save it, but there was nothing left. Camshaft cracked at every bearing, even the block itself got an internal oil line smashed with the rod.

Funny how it can be so quiet after something like that happens, isn't it. Had that happen too.

Very old forgetful brain here. I was thinking the first F"s had an allis engine.

Yup. Mine did. Was going to mention that, but seems it is a GM version, so I kept quiet.

Gleaner F production began in 1968 and ended in 1976. The gas engine is the GM 292 in line 6. I was able to get a fuel pump for mine from NAPA. Our Napa is very ag oriented so it isn't a problem. If your NAPA partsman will look in the ag section of his catalog he will find the correct pump.

1968 F had an Allis G301, I believe. That might be why the pump doesn't match up easily. 1969 and up had Chevy 292.

My 1969 Chevy P/U had the 250cid engine. When it was about 10 years old I put a 283 V8 it. Hal

I have a manual from Borg Warner and it has the G-262, GB-230, G-292 and G-250 for Model F Gleaner. Look like GM engines. Hal

They used a 292cid 6 cylinder in Chevy pickups back in the mid 1960's. I worked with a man that owned it and I drove it once sure had plenty of power even with a heavy load. I would install an electric pump if there's no replacement mechanical
pumps. Some were probably double action since they used vacuum wipers back then. Hal
