I am trying to get some muck ground, that hasn't been farmed in a few years, back into farmable condition. I have read a few things on here about a moldboard plow clogging up in muck ground. Is a moldboard plow not the best plow to use for this type of soil? How much will muck ground dry when it is worked up? Right not it is really wet.

Thanks
Nathan

Years ago, my dad worked up a muck swamp that had been cleared with a bulldozer of cedar trees. He used a JD B with dual tires and a 4' cut disk tiller. A disk tiller is a single shaft disk, this one had 5 18" blades. Very heavy frame with weighted steel wheels. Cut well. Even cutting up roots in the muck. I would suggest a disk rather than a plow.

Slatted bottom breaks suction and will clean in muck.

i'm from n al and down here if a hand full of dirt makes a mud ball its to wet to work. if you work it when its wet it will just make clods. don't understand how you guys can talk about working much ground. may not have a choice i guess, but goes against every thing i've ever been taught.

Just different ground in a different place, once my ground dries the way you would like it, it is to hard to sink a plow in. If you watch dirty jobs on discovery I am bout 15 minutes from where they taped the episode on the mud for pro baseball balls. Our topsoil is rich, needs twice the normal amount of lime and as soft and muck as a dairy cows poop.

The slatted moldboard was made for muck ground.

I know a little bit about really wet ground since I have about 60 acres 2 foot above sea level and I live on the deleware river. I run a cut harrow across the ground first, I use and 8ft behind a 4040. The tractor is over kill for the small disk. But I don't get stuck that way. After a few days of drying I use a moldboard, But I use smaller then the tractor is rated for. So if you have 4 bottom tractor use a 2 bottomplow. The ground will get dry if you keep it tilled.

Good response. I was going to say the same thing. The best plow for muck ground is one that you wont get stuck with! Drying out the top first is a good idea. If not you will be stuck very fast. I just put a pick of my white 4-150 pulling a 6 bottom plow on Ag Talk forum. It is under the crop talk forum on a subject about why the Iowa and Ohio ground is so fertile.

Hello davpal: Sorry I got wrong name to my other post but I wonder if you could post a link to the info you posted about why the ground is so fertile. I do not see a forum called Ag Talk. Thanks. agpilot
