Bottom seal on gear box leaking. Need to replace, but no time right now. Need to start mowing now! Is there something I can add to gear box oil to slow up leak until I can fix seal?

before you try the grease fix the first thing to do is determine what model BUSH HOG you have. the older models used a double seal on the output shaft and originaly 140 wt. oil. today these older models use 80w-90 wt oil. grease is a stop- gap fix but if the bottom seals are missing you run the risk of getting dirt in your lower bearings and complete gearbox failure.

do not try the grease fix in a newer model period.
these models use 80w-90 gear oil only and the use of grease will destroy the gearbox.

replace the seals.

Scott the grease works good in the newer models too. The type seals they use on the new ones start to leak on the 1st day of use some times. The grease won't hurt the gear box, in fact it's good in either old or new box.

SORRY BUT I HAVE TO DISAGREE. TOLERENCES TODAY ARE MUCH TIGHTER THAN UNITS BUILT YEARS AGO. ALSO THERE IS SUCH A BROAD SELECTION OF GREASE AVAILABLE. HIGH TEMP GREASE WILL NOT LIQUIFY POSSIBLY CAUSING DAMAGE.

Ok that's no problem on disagreements. You have every right to be wrong, and I respect that.

The tolerances in the gear box is the same on a 1950 model or on a 2000 model. There is'nt any such thing as high temp chassis grease. You don't use wheel bearing grease, use chassis grease.

is some EP ( extreme pressure) water proof grease. If you're worried about liquidity and the lack of oil-wedge, dump in some STP. There, you're done. Don't worry Burr, we're with ya!

A $5 seal versus at least a $250+ gearbox. When you have more time replace the seal or prepare to spend some bucks.

Like the previous post said, just pump it full of grease. I bought a new hog last year and the dealer(mechanic, I trust him too) told me that if it ever started to leak, just add grease. I wouldn't bother with a fitting, just take the filler plug out and pump it right in. It shouldn't cause any problems. The steering box on my Ford 3000 use to leak something terrible. I think it had something to do with the previous owner rolling it, but I'm not for sure. Anyway, I did the same with it, pumped it full of grease, and just like magic, no more leak. Didn't notice any difference in steering either. Hope this helps. Casey

always put a grease fitting on the fill port and pump it full of grease. Just a suggestion.

I guess the question is.. How Bad is it ?

The only thing I can think of is to plumb a clear piece of hose into the filler port
and connect it up to some sort of jury-rigged
tank above the level of the gear box..

Throw a gallon or two of of oil in the tank and refill when she runs out. (reason for the clear tube)

Good luck.

Add STP works wonders.
