I have a 501 sickle bar mower that's in great shape. I have a fairly large, rough field that I mow only rarely, therefore it makes more sense to have a brush hog than a sickle bar. Seems like I put a new part on every time I use it. Last thing I broke was the yoke, ouch! Anyone know what it's worth? All parts are in good working order and it has a new blade. I'm looking at a Howse brush hog from CT Farm supply (it's cheap) to do the job. Is the Howse any good? It's almost half the price of a Bush Hog brand.

I just bought a used 501 sickle bar mower (pitman arm and 7 foot blade) at an estate sale in Northern VA and it cost me 275 dollars. I used it to cut a bank that is too steep to get on with an bush hog. I put it on a small Ford 1710 tractor and it works great. I had to adjust the blade but even without the operator's manual they are fairly easy to figure out for mounting and adjustment.

Steve, Around here, a 501 will bring $250 to $400 depending on condition and time of year. I have a friend who bought a Howse to use on his rough ground. He's been very pleased with it. Good luck, Jogg.

I seen a 501 w/pitman arm sell for $480.00 at an auction a couple of months ago. It was in excellent condition. It still had the ford logo on it.

Is the 501 a pitmanless model or does it have a pitman arm? I would be interested, but only to the extent of about $300. We are you located?

Located in Ferrisburg, Vermont. I'll let you know if I can get a brush hog at a reasonable price. It does have the pittman arm. Thanks,

Steve
