I have a 75hp tractor with fwa. I would like to buy a field cutivator that would be sized for the tractor. How large of cultivator should I look for?

A while back we were looking at new Case field cultivator, dealer said 6hp per foot. We have a 7130 FWA (rated at 170hp or so) and he claimed we'd probably do alright with a 30 footer, but I don't know about that. I think a 26 or so would be perfect. Field cultivators need a little speed to be effective, I think. 3-4 mph is to slow. 5-7 is good. I'd say go 15 or less.

This has been hashed around alot in the past. If the ground is loose; eg, first pass was with a disk, you might be able to pull 18 ft. Pioneering in the spring or fall in undisturbed soil, better stick around 12 ft. Satisfactorily pulled an 18 ft IH45 and mounted harrow with a JD830 and a MM1050 in loose soil. The MM1050 would about choke when pioneering with that cultivator, so didn't even try with the JD830. Pulled the same IH45 with a 160+hp IH5288 and it was severe overkill. Bought a 26ft Wilrich and like the matchup.

"Here" we pull about a 16' (straight shanks) with a strong 85 HP and that's about all it wants. We can also pull an 18' springtooth with it but not quite as deep and 1 gear slower.

For 75 HP, about 12-14' would be a comfortable pull. You could probably pull a wider one, but you'd be going so slow and pulling it so shallow, it wouldn't work as well as it should.

In my very heavy clay soils, a Vibrashank (IH as pictured below) I struggled with a 14 foot on 85 hp, and run a 21 foot with 135hp pretty well. Lighter soils or S tines or skinier shovels could make up to a 16 foot work fine for you?

'Here' those 12-16 foot models sell for $100-250 most all the time.

Wayne: It's about 1.25 hp per shank, that will depend a bit on depth, and speed. I'm thinking S-tines, 6.5 to 7 mph. Last spring this discussion came up, I was doing 17 S-tines with my Farmall 140. I forget the exact figures, however Gary in IA was doing about the same with his roughly 200 hp CaseIH 1.25 hp per shank. Vibra shanks will be closer to 1.75 hp per shank. You've got variables, so that is just a rough estimate.

Heres about what you need at the very most. Its a 16 ft #45 IH with harrow.Believe it or not I watched it sell for $1000 at a farm sale near Moran,KS a couple of Saturdays ago.It had always been shedded.

I pull a 24 ft IH #4500 with a 150 horse tractor.

Depends on the shovels, how sharp the shovels, the soil, and how deep you want to stir.

I have a 21' with folding wings and it will make my 4020 spin out with the wings out. I can pull it good with the wings up (makes 14') in plowed ground or near no till if I only go a couple inches deep with 7" wide shovels on 6" centers and sharp edged shovels. That's about 95 hp. The 4020 tires don't have tall lugs but dig holes rapidly.

Here in Iowa 15'-16' is about all she would pull. A neighbor used to pull a 21' mounted field cultivator with a 4020 at about 3-3/12 mph.Jim
