The 2 row deere planter I was going to look at didn't work out. But I called another guy and he's got a Ford 309 2 row planter for $475. I've not seen it, but he said it's in excellent shape, always been shed kept, and the only thing that was wrong with it was a bearing was out in one of the disk openers, but that they had a new one ordered. It is only a single disk model, will that make much of a difference? I'm going to use it to plant cane for sorghum. I know I'll have to make the plates....any suggestions for that? What about the overall price? How hard will this thing be to set up row spacing and seed spacing? As always, thanks for the advice. Casey

Casey, I have a 309. It is easily adjusted from 28 to 42" rows. Just loosen some bolts and slide some stuff around. I would suggest ordering both operators and part manuals, if it doesn't come with them. Last I checked, New Holland can still get you all sorts of plates for the thing. You can also get blank plastic plates to cut your own notches in. As far as price, $475 sounds right. Around here, a good 309 will bring $750. The disks they are referring to are probably the fertilizer openers. My planter has runners for the corn seed. It uses separate single disk + shoe openers to band fertilzer off to the side of the row.

Tim,
Thanks for the response. I went to look at it today and decided to buy. I managed it for $450. I'm going to order a owners and parts manual tonight from NH's webpage. Couple of questions. The one fertilizer opener that had a bad bearing was off whne I got there. They said a guy was on lunch and was suppose to bring back the new one. I said that was fine and that I'd wait for him to get back, but for them not to worry about putting it in, that I'd take care it. Well, stupid me didn't check to make sure that it was the right bearing and of course it wasn't. Do you know if you can still get these from NH and if so what all is there to putting it in. It look kinda funny....no bolts or anything....just maybe a race and a track(sorry, I can't think of any better terms to desribe it). If I can get the bearing will it explain itself then? One more thing. No row markers. Any suggestions on that one. I've got an idea or two but would like to here others inputs. If it had markers, what do line up with them? Like I said before, this is my first planter so I guess I'm learning the ropes. Oh and BTW, the planter did seem to be in excellent shape, it was used last year, still had seed in the seed hoppers. Sorry for the long post, I guess I got carried away. Thanks again. Casey
