I have an unknown make/model of loader and one of the cylinders is leaking. I need to keep using the loader through the winter and just want to top it off. Problem is I don't know what type of fluid to use, or how high to fill it. I went to buy fluid but it appears to be brand specific. The inside of the loader support is the tank. I can not see the fluid it is so low in the tank. I am guessing the tank would hold several gallons. The leaking fluid is red and looks like tranny fluid. The loader is powered by a hydraulic pump on the front of the tractor. Tractor is a Ferguson F40, but loader is probably from the late 70's I would guess.-Loader has homemade mounts and is yellow. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

To be on the safe side I would drain all the existing fluid and then fill with any recommended Hydraulic fluid. Thenceforth you simply add the same.

a simple way to determine how to fill it is leave a few inches under fill hole for expansion and loader cylinders retracted to shortest length...i seriously doubt a simple hydraulic system like that couldnt use hy-tran or similar fluid...just dont mix types.

My combine uses tranny fluid for the hydraulics. That would not be unheard of.

My garden tractor with hydraulic lift and hydrostatic drive uses Dexron ATF. I've had it 37 years. Hal
