What is everyones opinion on this baler? Are they easy to work on, reliable, get parts for? What are they worth? What size bales do they make?

Thanks,

Joe

Why do some balers have engines on them? Is it just because the tractor they were used on didnt have PTO's? Can a baler that had an engine on it be converted over to PTO driven?

Thanks,

Joe

Joe,
Find yourself a Freeman 330 or 370. 290 New Hollands are slow junkers that parts hard to find for. I think almost impossible. An outfit up here still runs 2 of them and they have about 12 for parts in their boneyard. They also make a 17" X 23" bale. Can't make a nice 100 pounder with em. Have make 125 or your can't handle them. Freeman's have parts you buy at NAPA or make with a torch yourself. That's how them girls where made till they sold out to Allied a fews years back. Only thing modern at the Freeman's factory was the torch for cutting our cams for the pick ups. We custom hay and run to 80's vintage balers with the plunger shimmed and keep up with the Hesston boys and New Hollands.

Jeff:
Are you talking about New Holland hay balers?
Last I checked you can still buy parts for most of "em - say, at least for the ones that are no older than 65 or 70 years old. I use the great-grandfather of the 290, a NH 68 - just rebuilt it a couple of years ago - most internal parts still available from the NH dealer. Most people I know who really work hay and feed it don"t really make nice 100 lb bales - I guess things are different outwest.

You can still get parts in my area for all different types of NH square balers, even back to the NH 68 model. I have used them all my life and they are very dependable. Many times I have baled over 1,000 bales without missing a single bale, so don't listen to anyone who says they are not reliable or dependable. By the way, if your hay is dry it will make a good tight bale weighing 50-60 lbs, you won't kill yourself loading and unloading them.
