I was viewing the pictures contained in the book PICTURES FROM THE FARM and I observed a color photo of a Ford 8N pulling a New Idea T-6 or W-6 baler plus a wagon. Whatever happened to this model? Was it trouble prone like the Farmall 45T model?

I have one of these W6 balers. Mine is a 1953 model.
I bale a little with it for shows and have run some straw thru it in the barnyard. I have wondered about the needle stories taht were rumored. I also heard they were priced $2-300 higher than their competitors back then as well.

I bought mine from a fellow that worked at New Idea. It was said they wanted to buy them back to get them off the market like was said in Phil's post.

A friend has a T-6 that was acquired thru his brother who was a field serviceman with NI for many years. They used a McCormick knotter if I remember right.

I know of about three others, one in Ohio, and a couple in Minnesota.
I got some extra parts with mine. Better hang on to them I guess.

Thanks for the info guys.

We bought new New Idea twine baler May 25 1954 $1950.00. As I remember it broke four sets of needles before we replaced it with a Case and New Idea took it back to the factory. The Case baler that still had no paint worn off yet cost $1150.00 that same year. I still have the bill's of sale for both balers.

We had the T-6 twine baler new in 1954 or 55. Had large capacity, made good bales, very little leaf loss. we baled around 1200 bales and four sets of needles. The dealer and New Idea traded us a new Case and a letter of thanks for the field trial is what they called it. I have never heard of another one. Phil

I have heard that they were so prone to trouble that they were all supposed to have been recalled and destroyed by New Idea and that is why no newer New Idea balers were ever made. Some escaped the recall and survived tho. Would not try to use any of then except for a limited amount at a show. And they were bore or less a straight through baler and that is what caused their problems. Have seen 2 of them in my 64 years.

Saw one sell on a local auction last fall. Brought $300. The guy who didn't get it said he just wanted to make sure the other guy paid too much for it to scrap it. Dad had one back in the late 50s. It was the needle breakingest baler that was ever made. I don't know if it was just that one baler or a chronic problem on all of them.
