Do you look at Tractor Horse or Pto power in shopping for a tractor to run a baler. And whats a "norm" to look for when looking for a tractor to run a Jd baler and/or NH baler?? thanks

Michael I use an 8N yes an 8N and bale with a IH 46 baler an pull a rack on flat ground. I wouldn't do that on hills. It has about 23 PTO hp.

Good luck Dan

Sorry, not a Ford fan but will admit that if any tractor could do it it is prabably an 8N. They had to underrate the HP on those tractors, everyone I've ever seen would pull like the devil. My 2 bits.. HB

Our MH50 puts out about 32 PTO hp, maybe a little more since we put slightly oversized sleeves in it and that's about the smallest you want for a PTO baler.

It does sort of depend on whether you're going to bale on level ground or hills, and whether you plan on pulling a rack behind the baler. If the answer is yes and yes, something closer to 40 or 50 hp might be more appropriate, and more for the weight of the tractor to keep all that iron behind you under control going down a hill, than necessarily for hp.

But then too it always seems easier to cope with extra power than not enough power.

I would look for 35 or more hp, live pto, and also consider the brakes & weight of the tractor, especially if you are pulling a hayrack. A compact tractor of 40 hp will run the baler, but not pull it or stop it on a hill.

Of the above, you can bale without live pto, but it's a lot less fun.

Just as a reference I run a 14 T JD with a H Farmall or a 60 JD. I think maybe 35-40 engine HP minimum (??). HB

We used to pull our 66 NH with hayrack with a 1945 AC-WC all the time when I was a youngster. And THAT'S a long time ago.

Dad used to use a 1948 John A and then a 56 John Deere 520 on a 14T JD baler in some pretty steep hills. Those tractors were barely able to handle a full load of bales going up or down...you just didn't try to load 90 bales because they would tip over due to old dead furrows and pocket gopher mounds! Live pto and good brakes were very helpful.
Oh, tie the hayrack down to the wagon running gear in front. If you started loading at the rear (normal) and were going up hill, the rack would tip over backward off the running gear!

Well now Fudd you wouldn't be implying that I might have a little age on me would you?? Well to tell the truth it is a combination of 'some' age (hey isn't wisdom supposed to come with age?? Then what am I doing with this old stuff!!) and the fact I got some old tractors too. I think I'll blame it on the tractors. Later. HB
