I am having trouble attaching one to my Ford 2N. Can you tell me the correct way to attach it? (This is my first tractor and 3 pt implement, so I know nothing.) If I attach the lift arms, then I can't lift the bar on top of the mower high enough to attach it to the top point on the tractor. What am I doing wrong? Also, what's the correct way to attach the PTO?
Thanks
Judy

Judy I have a 501 model1492 the red one and I use a 49 8N. I don't know if a 2N is all that different.
First go to your Ford/New Holland dealer and for about $15 you can get an operators manual, a must, there is great info and pictures. Now look at the mower from the front and you will note that as you face it the left lift point is notably lower than the right. When you back up to it the left lift arm of the tractor ( as you sit in the seat) should be level with the lift point on that side of the mower. Attach it and then crank down the right lift arm to the level of the other lift point on the mower and attach. I then lift it just enough to be able to move it with the sickle blade in the up position and this allows me to easily connect the top link to the tractor. If you have the stacked holes for top link it should go in the bottom one. Hope I helped. Good luck Dan

I'm not faniliar with a 501 mower but have had expeience hooking up equipt. to 3pt. Maybe what you are saying is that when you raise the pins on the implement to the height of the lift arms it tilts the top link mounting point away from the tractor too far to attach the top link. Adjustable top links only extend so far and the bolt type that often came with the 9/2N's are impossible to work with. What you may have to do is hook a short length of chain between the top link mount on the tractor and the top link mount on the implement then raise the implement with the lift arms - put a cement block or wood block under the implement - lower the lift arm - take off the chain and attach the top link. This is a good case for not storing the implement at ground level but up on cement blocks that hold it at approximate height for mounting. Makes life easier.
The PTO should slip into the tractor with the implement mounted if the shaft is the right length, which should be the case if the implemenst has been used before with the tractor.
Hope this

This message & the following one are good advise, but for a 501 I think your problem is the upper arm on the mower doesn't come up high enough to reach the tractor mount, right? Because of that heavy spring that goes between the mower frame & the middle of the upper arm? Then disconnect that spring from the upper arm & hook the 3-point up. (Ours had a bolt in it, we put a pin & clip on instead.) When you have the mower connected to the tractor, lift it & the spring will be loose & easy to reconnect to the upper arm.

I don't think a 501 needs chain link or extra brackets in the upper arm linkage, as it needs this ridgid for that heavy spring to give the mower 'float'. You can adjust this spring so the mower just touches the ground, without digging in.

As long as they mentioned the pto, be real careful when you connect everything up the first time & lift the mower. If the pto shaft is too long, as you lift the mower it can bind & wreck the mower or tractor. Be sure there is enough room in the pto shaft for it to slide.

I'm not familiar with a 501, but my mower, (a Dearborn 14-59) and all the ones I've seen, require an extra 'H' shaped link that hangs down from the top link bracket of the tractor. The top link of the mower then goes into the bottom of this bracket.

I'm not familiar with the N series, but if you pull the pin out that is holding the upper link onto the big spring, then you can attach the upper link to the tractor. When you lift the mower, then you can put the pin back in the spring, as that connection will be loose.

Yea, we struggled with that for several years too by prying the mower up by hand, until the light finally came on! :)

Here's how I hook mine up. Put side arms on. Loosen the large bolt that tightens the big spring until there are only a few threads holding. this allows me to lift the center link and slide the pin in. Then tighten the big bolt until you can lift the mower of the ground by hand. About 80lbs.
