Well guys, I am real close to buying a NH 640 round baler. Haven't closed the deal yet. Tell me the good and the bad. What do I need to be looking at on this particular machine? I have done a lot of research on these but I still do not know if you need to turn off the PTO when dumping the bale? That is one thing I really want. I'll post a pic of it shortly.

Sounds like a great deal to me on a good baler. As RickB said, you do not have to stop the PTO to dump a bale.

When you hook the bale command up it should be able to tell you how many bales are through it.It would be nice if it had less than 30 000 through it,less than 20 000 would be nicer, but unlikely at that age.If it has more than 30 or even 40,it better be pretty cheap.pd.

I got him down to $4250. They have it advertised at $5500.

If that is the baler in the pic that you can get for 4250,it looks like a very good buy.Unless it has been repainted, the paint hasn't even been worn off the pick-up.Check the belts for cracks, rips and flat worn spots.Check the rollers to see if the gears are worn, should be VERY little play.Check the sprockets on the chain drives.Be sure they are still in good shape. If it all checks out and you buy it,it would be a good investment to replace all the chains,a sprocket will last for many many years if you don't run worn stretched chains on them, that's what causes sharp pointy sprocket teeth.Good balers though,we just bought a 648,almost identical to the 640,the new BR700A series are basically the same too, mostly just shield covering design changes and several minor mechanical changes over the years.New Holland is one of the few companies that has brains enough to leave somthing good alone. They never trash a good implement to replace it with a new one simply to say they have somthing new to sell you.Years of happy customers and reliable service with their equipment keep 'em coming back.pd.

That baler has the electronic Bale Command wrapping system. No reason the control box can't be powered up with any 12v negative ground system and run through a tie cycle without the baler running or hay in it. Unhook the bale size potentiometer shown in the photo above and to the front of the density cylinder. Slowly move the arm simulating bale fill. When the display reaches the preset bale size, hold the arm still and see if the twine tubes cycle. If the twine arms cycle, you WILL get an alarm afterwards due to not cycling the tailgate to dump the simulated "bale". Looks like a decent machine.

I asked him to send me some pics of the drive sprockets as a NH service manager I know told me to check those over good. Because if they were worn to a point I was dealing with a pretty tired machine. The pics he sent me they were pretty pointed. I will try to post them if I can figure it out.

Thanks for the advice.

No, you do not need to stop the PTO to dump the bale. Most important thing to check you might not think of is the condition of the open gears that drive the sledge rolls in the front of the bale chamber. Good balers, although they are getting some age on them now.
