I have a 56 Ford 851. I'm looking for a backhoe that the 851 can safely handle. What is the largest backhoe I can install on this type of tractor? I'm concerend that the backhoe I found may be too large for the tractor, but the owner used it on his Ford 3000 series tractor (although I don't think it was a 3000 it had 4 cylinders and was a gas model). I do not have a manufacturers name for the backhoe, the current bucket is 22" (not that size of the bucket matters) but there is a panel with approximately 6 levers. How is the size of a backhoe determined?

E-mail me your e-mail address and I will send you a scan of my 2000 industrial with hoe and loader if your are interested on how the ford pieces look on the tractor. You will be suprised how big the hoe looks on the 2000. The 2000 is basically the same as a 600 just newer, same way the 4000 is to the 800. This applies only to the 4 cyl models. the 3 cyl are very different.

Hoes are generally rated by their lift capacity, breakout force, and such things like that. Thats more determined by cylinder size and oil pressure. I don't know how big your tractor is, but something like a Woods 1050, I think would be good. A Long 1199 isn't terrible. We've got one that does a pretty good job with dirt, but stumps and the like give it trouble. I think Rhino makes a very good 3 pt hoe as well. Get something with it's own pump that runs on your PTO. I'd get one that has 2 or 4 levers. Much easier to run. Our Long has 2 levers and 2 foot pedels for the stabilizers. The left lever runs the boom swing and lift, the other runs the bucket curl and dipper curl. Much easier than all those levers.

the 851 is a 4 cylinder 172 cid gas model. it weighs in at about 3850 pounds. It is approx. 40-45 horse power and similar at the pto. it was one of Fords' earlier larger models. I believe the 851 was called the Powermaster industrial tractor...but very similar to the 600 which has the smaller bored engine at 134 cid. good advice on the external pump. what you describes seems easier to manage. this one has about 6 levers. that's all i know. i didn't measure the boom length. tmm
