I have an old wetmore hammermill a guy gave me that runs off of a belt. The guy said the old man that owned the farm used to have a couple of allis c's. I want to know if I can put a pto shaft on it and how? I want to use to grind corn for a few feeder pigs. And I want to paint it up and build a little trailer to put it on. Any body out ther done this before? Got any pic's of it? Thanks for the help

gramps has one that he uses an axle shaft and 900-20 tire from a grain truck welded to a pto yoke and shaft running at 1000 on his 1370 case. think he let the air out of tire mounted it snug and filled the tire. it is stationary beside the mixer

That conversion appears to have somewhat sought after "artillery" style wheels on it from the late 30's and early 40's, and it's on the original front axle. It even appears to have the orginal center hub cap. Some of those wheels seem to sell real well on ebay, depending on the size and manufacturer. We have an old trailer around here that only has 1 of those rims on it.

It is the "little dilly" model. It has a 3 grove 4 inch or there abouts pully on it. Could I put a side shaft gas engine on it like off of a tiller? Thanks for the help

Sounds like you have a good excuse to buy an old tractor with a belt pulley.

Wetmore made lots of later mills with gear boxes to change the PTO speed. Wetmore Clipper and Glutton were very popular in our area with a 540 pto. Depends on the size of your mill too. There were 540 rpm and 1000 rpm pto boxes used on them and trailer kits made by Wetmore too. Several companies made trailer pto kits years ago that were mostly a jackshaft on bearings hooked to the pto shaft and a large and small double or triple groove belt pulleys to get the right speed.

This may or may not be a silly idea, but is it running right now as is?If it is,you can get a tool that you stick a magnetic strip on the shaft and it will read the rpm for you.Knowing the actual opperation rpm will make it alot easier for you to properly convert it.

We used a car differentials, weld one axle solid so the other side spins twice as fast. On one we had the axle hooked directly to the grinder, the other we had the tire running against the drive pulley. Just gotta make sure it turns the right direction.

Doggone it,I had a PTO adapter kit here to change a John Deere 10A hammer mill from belt pulley to PTO. A platform that held a shaft with a large flywheel and a different pulley for the mill with 5 or 6 grooves for V belts. I tried to give that thing to a local Deere collector, told other folks that I had it. Nobody would come and get it. It went to the crusher when I let a scrapper come in and clean up around here.

It would depend on how fast the mill is supposed to turn.... The newer ones like the NH 355 mill/mixer I have turn (I think) somewhere in the vicinity of 3600 rpm. I know the driver is at least 24" and the driven pulley between 4 and 6". That doesn't quite equate to 3600 rpm on the mill so I know I've got some numbers wrong in there, but they turn up FAST.
I beleive this one has about a 4' wide serpentine belt driving the mill. Big speed and BIG power.
I'd think you would want a bare minimum of a 4 section C series power band belt for a good sized mill.

As the others say, a 540 pto runs a lot slower than a flat belt does, so you would need to gear it up some to be an effective grinder.

Typically too fast & too much shock load for a chain & sprockets, and often a fair amount of hp is used, so you end up needing multiple matched veebelts. Those pullies are not cheap. Perhaps off of a junked pto powered grinder.....

I have looked into do it but never got around to completing one yet. Problem is you need a way to speed up the drive from the 545RPM to more like 1500 rpm. I was going to do it with a chain drive but as I said I got to busy with other things to get the job done, I have all the parts just not the time to weld all the things up

I know the hammer mills on mix mills have approximately a 24" driver pulley and a 6" driven pulley to run the mill. Thats a pretty good increase in speed to run it. If you can find the right pulleys cheap enough of course it can be done but you may be better off belting it up and running it.

Just my opinion

I remember our old massey had a grinder on it but we have since converted it to a roller mill. When it was a grinder,it had belts and it had either 3 or 4 heavy v-belts.It took at least 50 hp to run it,80 if you wanted to get 1 and a half ton done today.
