I just inherited a Dearborn 2 bottom plow for my '51 8n. The plow is in very good condition other than one of the coulter discs is missing. Needless to say parts for these plows are practically non-existant. I have a five acres field I would like to plow this spring. My question is how important are these coulter discs? What is there funtion? Can I plow without them? If not, does anyone know where I might find one? Thanks for your help.

Yes, you can plough without coulters, but if you are doing anything with any surface residue, you will probably end up with one blister of a mess. The coulter are to cut the vertical sidewall so that the share and mouldboard are turning over an even width of soil and dividing the top residue so the mouldboard turns under an even amount of residue, not great slugs and hunks of soil with a ragged sidewall. Position the axle of the coulter either over the plough point or slightly ahead and if you have to run with one coulter, put it on the back furrow. Watch your local auctions and watch the scrap piles or junk wagons. Even if somebody buys a whole pile of stuff, he may sell a few bits out of it.

They are used to cut the trash in front of the moldboard. In thick trash, it can collect in front of the plow mount and make a wad of trash. If what you are plowing is bare, has been tilled first (wih a disc or other tool), or the trash is thin and brittle, you should be fine. Coulters can be bought from companies with generic mounts, you could find a way to mount these if you really need them.
