Bush Hog Fix

I was enthusiastically bush hogin' this morning. On larger stuff, I'd put her in reverse and back over it.

In doing so, the odd three inch stump frozen in bent the steel skirt on the back towards the center far enough so that the blades hit it.

This, of course, creates a hell of a racket and probably isn't good for the life of the rig!

I found I was able to fix it by:

Backing up so that the centerline of the tractor and bush hog were about 20 feet from a big tree - bush hog closer

Putting a length of chain around the tree

Hooking another chain with hook to the epicenter of the bent spot

Linking the two with a low ratio come-along and cranking with care - no great effort was required!

Of course, the tractor was in gear, brakes set, and wheels chocked.

It worked!

A welding buddy of mine made me a "gator bar" that is used by iron workers for such purposes. It's a 4ft long piece of stout 2in box tubing some "jaws" cut with a torch out of 1/2in plate. With a tool like that, these modifications take minutes if not seconds and require the strength that it takes to open a door...

"Bush Hog" is the brand name for a type of rotary mower that trails behind a tractor. They're made to cut heavy, over-grown pastures, etc. Most people refer to them as bush hogs, whether or not that is the brand name.
