Surely Someone Here Knows.......

I have a 2 bottom (flat bottom, 16", I think) Ford turning plow, made for the 3 point hitch. I got it with my tractor. My question is:

There is a metal wheel attached at the back of the plow to a spindle. While plowing, it stays on fine, but when I raise the plow and hit a bump, it falls off. I have even not noticed it being off and plowed several furrows without it, and don't notice much, if any difference.
I know there is a proper way for this to be attached, but do I need it if it plows fine without it? I use this plow twice a year on my garden (1 acre) and twice a year on my neighbor's (1/2 acre).

Thanks for any guidance,
Tommy D.

That is the land wheel, and if you get into heavy ploughing you WILL notice a difference because your tractor will swing right and you won't be able to stop it. The wheel is counteract the side draft on the plough bottoms. I don't know how your fastens, probably anything from a cotter pin to a snap ring, sorry you'll have to look real close.

You know, I just looked at the back ends of a couple Dearborn/Ford plows at an auction last Saturday, and I can't recall how they were fastened. My JD 3-pt plow has a couple of set collars on the shaft on either side of the mounting bracket. Maybe Ford used something similar?
