I found a new idea belt driven rake today. All the teeth are there and appear to be in good shape. Pretty good tires. Good paint. The only thing i could see was it probably needs a belt. He wants $500 for it. Was thinking I might could trade him some on it. Anyway were these good rakes. Is that too much money? Thanks in advance

I used to own one of these, there's a lot less to go wrong with them, cause they have no gearbox. I had problems with the front of the basket frame being weak for the first 2 feet or so, so I boxed the whole frame of the basket, from the curve to the front hanger. The best option we installed on the rake was the depth stop wheel, on the right hand side of the basket, keeps you from scalping in rough areas. The best way to use any rake (that doesn't have dolly wheels) is to hook to a 3 point drawbar, so you can raise the rake, to allow you to rake only the areas you want to. Around here, I have seen these rakes bring as little as $25.00 at auction.

We've had one of those rakes for probiably 25 years ourselves. Good rakes, but like others have said the front 1/2 of the frame isn't quite what it should be. The tongue got ripped off ours and the frame on it is currently in not so good of shape. My dad turned way too sharp with the M while raking and caught the rear tire on the frame. Twisted it up pretty good. Not sure what we'll do with it at this point because the whole front 1/2 is gonna have to get cut out and replaced or something. I will say replacing the belt can be a bear by yourself though.

I have 2 of the belt driven rakes. That is all I use to bale about 100 acres a year. Simple design, easy to work on. Belts cost $100 at a NI dealer and should last 25 years. Not high tech but gets the job done. Hooks up and unhooks in seconds.

I have a NI PTO powered 3pt hitch rake. Works great! Bought a new belt thru NAPA dealer. Not any problem.

Had one. The offset wheels of the New Holland were better in my mind; would leave a bunch of hay behind when crossing a dead furrow.

It is a good rake. I sold hundreds as New Idea Territory Manager, Avco bought New Idea but sold it to Agro I am sure they have replacement belts.

Does anyone have a number on that belt so that if I get the rake I could go to a local belt place and pick up a belt maybe cheaper than what the dealer will charge. Thanks

I have one that I aquired several years ago, a good rake generally. I will need a belt soon and was told that Carquest can get me the needed belt

I owned one of them along with a NH 56 when I farmed. The NI was a very good rake. The basket speed is a little slower than the NH which is an advantage when using higher ground speeds than perhaps would be appropriate. If you need a rake and this one is in good shape for $500, I think it is a good buy.

I've seen them sell at auctions for around $500. We had an earlier NI model that had a gear box rather than the belt and never repaired anything, including replacing any teeth in more than 25 years. The last 15 years it was stored outside. If it is a five bar, $500 sounds reasonable.

Is it a round belt? I have a Ford 513 that was built by New Idea for Ford. Pretty decent rake, but carries too much weight on the drawbar- tires slide if you try to rake wet hay for chopping or high moisture baling. MD Fran is right that Avco bought New Idea, but that was YEARS ago... Owned by Agco now (think Allis Chalmers, MF, Hiniker, etc.) And yes, parts are available.

AGCO owns New Idea in reply to Fordfarmer, 03-13-2008 19:06:34
But don't go to AGCO for Hiniker (who bought Fox-Brady) parts, because Hiniker Company is an independent firm that is not part of their organization. Maybe you are thinking of Farmhand/Dunham-Lehr, or Glencoe, which AGCO did absorb.

I've used one of the New Idea belt driven rakes for several years and have been pleased with it. AVCO bought out this line I think and may carry the parts still.
