Any ideas about this old manure spreader?

Part of the field/barn cleanup. This spent many many years in the barn. Towed it outside last year for barn renovations. Far as I can tell everything moves on it and the tires aren't actually in bad shape. I can spin the whole "paddle" (excuse my lack of knowledge) in the back and everything moves. Ground driven. I had someone tell me they'd take it off my hands for $100 and they'd use it for decoration but someone else said they might interested in it to use it. I've been looking on ebay and have seen some antique manure spreaders going for around $300.

Wondering if anyone can help me identify make/model. I can't find a plate on it anywhere but under the surface rust in the front I can kind of make out the words "...farming equiptment today...".

Wood is actualy in good shape.

Hate to just scrap it and if someone can put it to use and I can make a bit of money for it, even better.

thanks!

Any idea where that serial number plate might be? I have looked all over the thing and don't even see rivets where it might have been. Unless it's underneath somewhere but I looked all over the top and sides of the tongue area and nothing and all down the sides and such. Would love to find out for sure what it is and see if I can get a fair price for it.

It is a New Idea I sold many of them. I beleive it is a Model 15. New Idea made several sizes and they all looked alike. Somewhere on the spreader is a serial number plate. They never really wore out usually the wood decayed due to leaving them set out with manure on them. They were sold with 24 inch rims and old truck tires because the dealer could sell them cheaper.

that is a new idea ground drive spreader. popular with backyard farmers in that you didn't need a pto to run it- even hook it to your jeep or pickup and you could spread. i'd say $300-700 would be fair. if you want a price set at auction, there's a big absolute consignment auction in whitney point, ny on april 26.

It was inside for years and years and only spent part of the last year outside. Axels are free, all the paddles and such at the back are free. My husband said the two arms that stick out the front move up and down as they should so I think it's in good shape and the tires actually look pretty decent and the wood is very solid.

This is a New Idea spreader. The name tag on mine is in the right front corner of the right side. I saw a very clean one sell for $900.00 at Fredericksburg, Va Saturday. If it has set a long time you need to lube the many fitting and free up the ratchet arms on the right side. Also oil the chains.

Wait, you mean to tell me I have something potentially valued at $500 sitting in the field???? Wow, never thought this stuff I have was more than maybe 200 total but I've heard a few hundred each for the 3 things I've dealing with.

You could drive from MN, it'd be a nice road trip :-)

My husband went up a bit ago and pulled on those arms and it did engage something down the back. How could I test to see if it actually works? If I just pulled it with something, do I lock those arms somehow? I'm assuming the paddles and the "Track" in the box are tied in to the axle some how, hence the ground driven part?

Definitely soak those main chains in oil before you drag it around or you'll be repairing broken chains.

My Dad bought one years ago, I've spread many loads of tobacco stalks with it, he priced it one day to an Amish and it was gone. 'IF' I remember correctly, the left lever is to put in gear and the right one is to adjust the speed of the floor chain which depends on what you're spreading. Ours had the tractor tread tires on it for drive traction, you know your plugged when the tires start skidding on the ground;-)

I'm sure it is a #13 New Idea ground driven (not PTO) manure spreader. If it is in working condition it is worth $300 to $500.

Thats definitely better than a "decorator." That said I think 100
-300 is a fair price. The auctions around here (northern VA), manure spreaders of that vintage can go for 10 dollars...if no one's there to buy one, or 600, as they did this past weekend, when there were a lot of people there to buy them! But yeah, the person looking for a decoration is probably better off finding an old horse drawn one, like the one that is sitting in my woods!

It id definatly NOT a David Bradley or Oliver as suggested. More like a New Idea, they are the only company that at that time used a 24" tire, all others were smaller tires. And New Idea orange was called bittersweet and not sure of the actual name for the green but simular to Oliver green. The item you refered to as a paddle is called a widespread or beater and the individual blades are called paddles.

Not sure what you mean by indexing... you mean pull the handles sticking way up at an angle on the front and something should happen? I am heading up there in a few minutes and could test it...

I had an old Oliver that looked similar, especially the way the levers are mounted on the front. Does the apron index to the rear when you pull the right (left as you face it) handle?
$300 is a fairer price if the apron indexes and the beater bars and spreader paddles work.

The only David Bradlely spreaders I've seen were called "Used Auto Tire" Specials which would preclude a spreader with 24" tires (which cost alot if you have to buy new ones). However, maybe they made larger spreaders also.

Bring it 120 miles south-southeast into NJ horse country after you paint it and it will get $1500.

Two other things I noticed (one I thought was odd)...

The color is a reddish/orange but then when I looked real close at some of the linkage/geers near the wheels, I could see a greenish paint, but not quite JD green. Also - they're 24" tires. Not sure if any of that helps in IDing it.

Thanks for the tip. Never even heard of that brand so at least it'll give me something to go on. My dad was born in 38 and this thing was on the farm as long as he could remember.

We've got a New Idea that looks just like that. Does anyone know of a reasonably priced source for tires?

Reasonable 24 inch tires? Implement dealer for new, bring $. Some Semi truck trailers used 24 inch tires instead of 22.5, a truck stop may have a take off with second recap that would hold air and be cheap. School bus maintenance shop might be another source. These would be smooth tread, not lugged implement- but old heavy truck tires with a patch will hold air for ag use when no longer allowed on road.
