Has anyone ever modified the old Freeman SA cylinders to make them DA? I bought an 861 Ford with a Freeman loader with SA loader and I am finding it impossible to find cylinders to fit it. I would like to have existing ones modified if possible. Thanks.

I don't know about Freeman loader but it seems like alot of the old SA cylinders were ram type instead of piston type in which case they couldn't be modified. Will the loader handle the stress you could put on it with DA cylinders?

If your cylinders are 1 way pressure the head gland may not be able to stand the pressure on it.

A good machine shop may be able to turn a head gland with the proper seals to hold the pressure.

Yours may have the wiper seal and nothing else.

What length cylinder do you need?

There is a company that can custom make to the length you need.

The cylinders are 42" eye to eye and 20" lift. I had a quote of $710 per cylinder to custom make. That is why I am hoping to modify current cylinders.

Most cylinders are 8" longer eye to eye then the stroke is.

That is an odd duck that you have. What is on the ends. Just a hole or a clevis?

You can put together a cylinder like you need by using parts from 2.

You need a barrel from a 20" stroke and a ram from a 36" stroke. You would have to shorten the ram 2".

It would cost about $350 each to have cylinders made like this. And 14 weeks to get them.
