Hydraulic cylinder help questions.....

Hi guys,
Please bear with me on this problem. I have never used a hydraulic cylinder before, so don't know anything about them.
I bought a IH 4 row planter in Jan. and a hyd.cyl came with it. The previous owner used a new - New Holland tractor and used 1 hose to raise and lower the hyd.cyl. although the cyl. has 2 fittings for hoses, it has just 1 hose on it now.

I own a JD 2240 that has 2 remote openings on the back. Yesterday I tried to get the cyl. to work by plugging the 1 hose that it has on it now into both of the openings, but the cyl. did nothing. (Assuming that 1 opening is a supply and 1 a return)

So my questions are....

1. Can this cyl. operate on my JD with just 1 hose? (does it need a return line?)

2. Are there different hyd. hose connectors? (The hose plugged into the JD opening, but how do I tell if the ends are opening?)

I checked the fluid levels... they are good - just changed it a couple of months ago. I also have a front loader on this tractor and it works fine.

Any ideas,

Rick

Thanks for all of the replies!
Josh was right, under the hyd. lifting lever assembly there is a small lever that needs to be turned in order for the hyd. fluid to make it down the hose.
Tried it yesterday and had the disk doing it's job. Just need a few more days of dry weather to make it down the remainder of the field.

Thanks again,
Rick

In some cases your tractor needs to be set for single acting cylinder work. My 300 Farmall has a setting on the lift controls for single or double acting operation. Not sure about newer JD but you might check your manual and see if that is necessary.

 It's a male tip thing in reply to Rick8Nrookie, 04-21-2008 04:12:11
The comments about single acting cylinders are correct, but remember, it worked as a single acting cylinder on the Ford, so the cylinder configuration must be correct for the planter. Josh is on the right track with the hose tip thing. You need a different male tip for the JD than what was used on the Ford.

RICK;;;;MOST TYPICAL CLY ON FARM EQIUPMENT WILL HAVE A PORT ON EACH END ,PRESSURE TO THE REAR OF THE CLY[END CAP] WILL PUSH ON THE PISTON AT THE END OF THE ROD AND MAKE THE ROD EXTEND ,IF THE IS NO OPENING AT THE HEAD CAP [ROD END]AIR WILL BE TRAPPED AND THE CYL WILL NOT EXTENDUNTIL YOU BLOW A SEAL, PREASSURE AT THE HEAD CAP WILL RETACT THE CYL.IF THE PISTON HAS BYPASS THE HEAD CAP SISE OF THE PISTON WILL EVENTUALLY FILL WITH OIL AND THE CLY WILL NOT MOVE OUTAS FAR GRADUALLY SHORTINING THE STROKE,IF THE PORT ON THE END WITH NO HOSE HAS BEEN PLUGGED OFF ,REMOVE PLUG CARFULLY AS IT WILL BE UNDER
PRESSURE [STORED ENERGY]PUT IN A HOSE AND USE AS A TWOWAY CYL, TYPICALLY 2WAY CLY,S WILL NOT WORK FOR LONG HOOKED UP WITH ONE HOSE [SINGLE ACTION] SINGLE ACTION CLY ONLY HAVE ONE PORT AND THIS IS ON THE END CAP; HOPE THIS HELPS

Ok, figured that paragraph out..... You tried the single hosed hyd cylinder on both of your tractor ports, but it didn't do anything.

Gravity is what will pull the hyd cyl closed, so if the cyl was fully extended & you don't have it hooked up to anything, it really wouldn't do anything.

You can put a hose to the other port & use it as a 2-way cyl - be careful of dirt in it if it was just left open tho.

Yes, a hydraulic cylinder can operate with only one hose. It's what is called a single action cylinder, meaning that it only has power in a single direction. The cylinder depends on the weight of the equipment to move in the other direction. Just make sure the hose that is connected to the cylinder is attached to the side that will allow the hydraulic pressure to raise the implement.

John Deere did have a different style hydraulic tip that they used for several years. The standard tip that is used on almost all equipment today is not the same. The JD tips had more of a tappered end that made it easier for them to slip out of the coupler on the tractor if something went wrong. I'm not sure if the 2240 that you have has the older style JD tips, or the newer ones (anyone else out there know for sure?). If it does have the old JD connectors and the tip on the hydraulic line is a newer one, you'll have to get an adapter or change the tip on the hydraulic line.

On the old style JD couplers, there was also a small lever under each valve hookup that had to be turned 90 degrees once the hose was connected. This acts to open the ends of the hydraulic line and coupler so oil can flow.

Good luck,

Josh in WNY
