and need your advice. The thing has sat out and weathered, but I am fairly confident it can be rebuilt. Going to take the box off and clean or replace the meters and reinstall with new hardware. Sorry no pic. What I want to know what is your expreience with these things, and are there any tricks I need to know. Plan on using this to seed alfalfa. TIA

Last year was a tough year. Some dryland as pitiful, irrigated was fine if you could pay the bill. Good farmland our way runs around max $2500 for dryland, $4500 for irrigated. Quite a few smaller neglected farms around here and the older equipment cheap. Might want to check out Rowell Auctions. Never have been paticurally fond of the way they auction, but they sell alot of land down here. Link

[Hey Joshua,
We were down there last October house hunting. The people we bought our place from bought another piece of property west of us. While i was visiting their place a couple of gentlemen were harvesting Pnuts . Man that ground was hard from no water. Really want to get up and close to those machines. What does land run an acre down your way 80 acres or so?
As far as your seeder sounds like a deal to me. All i have is a JD fb it works great after about 100 hrs of work on it. should last me a life time. I think the biggest thing with alfalfa is a good seed bed , quarter inch deep , pack it a little .. hope for some rain and walla alfalfa.

Yeah, I get the Market Bulletin. My problem is this is new idea for us. The experiment station reccomended using a no till drill. Tried it and total flop. Not enough experience with alfalfa or no till drills. Now have ideas for alfalfa. I'm thinking, notice thinking, about removing the small roller from the Brillion, weld a hitch to it, taking the drill and hooking it behind the roller, pull the tubes out of the boots and tie up the drag chains, and put the small roller on the drill to press in the alfalfa. Crazy, no, yes, or don't have a clue. Hate to waste seed, last batch was 3 bags at $500.

Farmer 101L, if you want to see some fun with southern ag, come around the middle of October. Believe me, between smelling peanuts and watching them pick cotton, you won't forget it.

Hey Joshua,
I've got 12 acres i play with up here in north IL. Should be down to visit the wife in a couple of weeks. I'm really interested in farming in Ga. I really love that Market Bulletin. Do you get that Paper? It sure helps the little guy out i''m sure. How many acres are you doing? I just spread mine on with a pto fertilizer spreader. Works real well. Then i drag it in. To pack it in a little I turn all the quads loose on it. LOL only 4 acres though. If you get that alfalfa going sure would like to visit you and your field. Haven't been down your way yet would make a nice drive for sure. Good luck.

Alright, it's my luck. If it weren't for bad luck I would have none at all. Parts for it are obsolete, and I have no plans to spend money on the seeder portion. Cut the seeder off today, going to use it as a land roller. Leads me to ask, has anybody have a cheap way to seed alfalfa. Have a John Deere B drill available to use, I am rebuilding it for sure. Any advice appreciated.

Were over in Worth county in between Albany and Tifton. This alfalfa we're trying is a new variety released in Georga. There are two varieties released about 2 years ago, Bulldog 505 for middle GA and Bulldog 805 for south GA. As for drying, I lucked up on a conditioner for early in the season and I have a sicklebar mower for later in the season. 90 degree days and I doubt I'll have much trouble drying it. I also am not planning to cut everything in one day. Two reasons, #1 is I don't have enough capacity, and #2 I am pretty much a one man band now, this is my deal to make or break. If your interested in the seed, Athens Seed Company is the sole seller of this seed in GA. On a side note, talked to them last week, they said seed is somewhat unpredictable. The only grower is in Oregon, and the guy said they needed a source closer to GA. The Extension specialist said to cut the alfalfa up to mid June with a conditioner, and then afterwards with just a mower due to the fact that the hay will get contaminated with blister beetles. If you just cut it, the beetles run out, whereas a conditioner crushes them and leaves them in the hay. Also, he said that these alfalfas you actually had to breed dormancy into, they are only dormant 2 months in midwinter. There are a few other alfalfas available down here, but the Extension is pushing these. There has been alfalfa experimented with here by the dairy guys, I'm looking at a commercial market, and it would also tie in to some of my future plans. Thinking if I can get this to work, I'm going to use it in rotation, two years alfalfa to a year of corn. Anyway, probably more info than you needed.

Hi Joshua ,
My wife is stationed at Warner Robbins. We bought six acres and here almost dream house. I've lived all over this country, and we are really enjoying the Perry area. My question is your going to raise alfalfa? How the heck are you going to get it to dry. I didn't think it was raised down there that much. Where are you located at?

Already know who my local dealer is. However, there has probably only been 5 of these things sold around here total. No demand. I was hoping to find some parts off the internet so I can see just what I have gotten into. Have no pictures right now, I'll try to find a digital camera tomorrow and snap some pictures. Noah used this thing to plant his first crop (really about 30 to 35 years old) and I'm trying to rehabilitate this thing. Pretty sure I saw a seeder similar to it not too long ago on here. Anyway, thanks for the help.

JoshuaGA

P.S. We priced a new seeder over the phone. $11,000 for an 8' seeder. I want to try to use this one if possible, at least until I see how my new crop pans out.

Looked it over a little closer today, can't find a model number to save my life. I need a couple of roller bearings, the seed cups, the fluted rolls, and the shaft the fluted rolls. So, the two questions I have is where can I get these parts new and does anybody have a few pictures of these older seeders that they could post along with the model number so I can identify mine. Again, TIA.

You can check Brillions website to find a dealing in your area. As far as the model, It might be better if you post a picture so we can see what you have and figure it out that way. I'll try and post a picture of mine tomorrow.

I bought an older pull type a couple of years ago, but it was stored inside so it was in running shape.

The one thing I will recommend is to make sure you have a seeding chart that matches your model. It is usually located on the inside of one of the seed bin doors, but it may be faded or hard to read.
