Could someone please give me a quick run down on the pros and cons of the wheel type rake versus the basket type (i.e. JD640). I plan to use one or the other to rake alfalfa, any recommendations would be greatlty appreciated.

Thanks.

the wheel rake is superior in performance and reliability.

I am no fan of wheel rakes as they used to skip right over the top of rain soaked hay. We presently use a three point pto rake so that we can keep up a basket speed to get everything moved, and we rake our hay 24 hours after cutting which is ideally (ha!) 24 hours before baling. Having said all that, there are lots of fellows here who like the simplicity, lower cost and speed of a wheel rake, but with our type of hay and weather, they just don't work well. Tom

I have no experience with a wheel rake. Most around here seem to like the basket rakes much better for hay. I understand the wheel rakes work very well for baling cornstalks, as they follow the bumpy ground better.

The wheel type work real good with pure grass hay, and they are quicker.
This Sittrex here is quicker and cleaner than a NH wheel drive, or Ford pto drive in grass hays.
