Ok, it seems that there are lots of people with this problem.....we have banana bales!

This is what we've done so far (a little better, but sometimes just as bad as first):

(forgive me if I don't know the right terms, hubby is out working on it)

sanded & repainted the hay chute

freed the "stuck" dogs.

freed the upper & lower pieces that hold the bales

We've been feeding it by hand right now., so can make a big or small "windrow"(obviously not hay season in PA right now, using a round bale)

We can tighten the two bolts that regulate the pieces that hold the bales, but the right side is always longer, left is always shorter. Maybe a lot sometimes, sometimes pretty close.

Please, HELP~!~

Bigger windrows and slow ground speed. Keep the pick-up full and out of sight.

I do know we took the hay wedges out. 2 different tractor repair persons said in the shape they were in, better to be out. It really didn't make any difference. They were in horrible shape. New ones were almost more than we bought the baler for!
I will relay your suggestions to hubby. If anyone else has any more, please feel free to post!!

thanks!

Had the same troubles - played with the bale tension, moved the feeder forks, got new forks, etc, none of which worked. What DID work was shimming the stationary knife (sharpening it, too), to "close the gap" between it and the plunger knife. World of difference for me. I don't know exactly why - but it worked.

Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong but that machine all uses wooden slides on the plunger too to act as plunger bearings. Perhaps the plunger is flopping around in there alittle and if one of the hay wedges are missing then perhaps he may also want to check those wooden slides.

You are not getting the hay far enough into the bale chamber. On your conveyor chain that moves hay from pickup to chamber there should be four tines. They are made out of aluminum pipe. They should be sticking down as they pull hay toward chamber and then the tines will swing back and up as they glide back to get another bunch. first make sure you did not lose one of the four tines and then make sure they are free to rise up and over hay on there return trip. They have a greese zerk where they swivel. Make sure they are greased. My guess is you lost one of the tines.

On the sides of the bale chamber there are hay wedges, that look like their named. Most NH have two sets. Make sure they are in good shape, one may be missing off of the right side of the chamber. If the hay dogs are good, and the wedges are good, you may have to adjust the feeder carriage penetration. If it's the right side of the bale standing at the back of the baler looking forward, the feeder carriage needs to be adjusted so it goes farther into the bale chamber. The owners manual should have step by step instructions on how to do this. This would put more hay on the left side of the bale. Another important thing I've learned is that the older NH balers like a nice big consistant windrow. That can make a big difference in bale shape. I'm sure you'll get many more responses, but that's what I can think of at the moment. Good luck.
