Anyone have experience with DR chippers? (DR Power Equipment, Vergennes, VT) I"ve been getting their sales literature for several years and sometimes think of buying one, but am always concerned when I see the pictures in their brochures. They always show a large branch with no small branches attached as they feed it into the machine. Does that mean that it can"t accept the larger branch with its smaller branches and their leaves attached to it? If so, it isn"t much good if so much branch preparation is necessary ahead of the actual chipping process.

A good start point is flywheel weight. The amount of rotating mass makes a huge difference in effeciency. Also look for more knives, and that they are sharpened on both sides. You will get a lot more machine with a PTO design than if you have to buy another engine too. Mike

I have a small one (10-11 hp). I don't trim everything but the input chute is three and a half inches square. If you can fold the small branches enough to pass into the chute all’s well. Really crooked branches can be done but are real hemorrhoids. They're a trade-off like a lot of things. If you're in the clearing business they're not big enough. If you're cleaning the deadfall in a small wood lot the price fits the job.

Like everyone else, their quality has gone down hill these last few years. As a general rule of thumb, if it is made to chew up the leaves too, then it isn't really made to chew up branches. Only twigs. I have heard good things about those UGH jima chippers :( and they seem to hold up pretty well. Are you looking for a PTO drive or a gas engine type? Mike
