I have to replace an oil seal on the 1.5 inch input shaft of my 3pt snowblower. It is a rubber seal with a spring around it and although I was able to remove it from the outside with the shaft in place the seal and spring are really dead now.

Is it possible to put the new seal in from the outside with the shaft still in place?

It's basically just like the rear axle seal on your truck. If the shaft has a groove in it you are gonna have to figure something out because it will leak again and probiably sooner rather than later. If there is a leak you can have a speedy sleeve installed. Good luck

may be a mute point now as you have it apart, but many have found that John Deere corn head grease works great in gearboxes.

Then you do not have to worry about the seals leaking.

However, being from KY I would not know what a snowblower looked like, so this KY redneck repair procedure using grease and baling wire might not work on a high dollar snowblower.

Good luck,

grease the lip of seal and shaft and make sure theres no burr's on end of shaft...if there are take em off with a fine tooth file and then emory cloth...tap the seal in working your way around the outer edge...if theres no step inside for seal to bottom out on then just make it flush with housing.

Sometimes there is a slight groove wore in shaft where old seal ran. If so when you install new seal leave it out on shaft 1/32. It will function just as well and save you from taking shaft out for repair.
