I agree withe maxwell99.

Fill the gearbox with John Deere Corn Head Grease.

One 14 ounce tube is $3.50+ and looks like lime pudding.

Filled the gearbox on my JD #5 mower last weekend before cutting hay.

Worked out OK and stopped the oil leak.

Hope this helps.

just fill gearbox with grease, I believe you will be ok.

Let others jump in here, but we have run many old gearboxes for years filled with grease.

Best grease if you are high dollar is John Deere corn head grease.

Good luck and stay safe,

If I understand you right , the gearbox is leaking oil. If it is the bottom seal you have to take the blade carrier/stump jumper off the bottom shaft. On my old Bush Hog it had left hand threads. If you can fish the seal from the end of the shaft you can take the old seal to a bearing supply place and they can probably match it up. If it is the front shaft bearing getting to it will, of course, be easier. I was advised to just fill the gearbox with grease since grease seal repairs didn't always last too long. There is a difference of opinion here on the grease solution. My bush hog had non grease related problems and I solved them by buying a new one.
