I have a 1956 ford 640 and just bought a 501 sickle bar mower. I have a slip clutch on the pto
and the shaft on the mower is to long to hook up w/ the slip clutch attachment. What would be the best way to hook up? Remove the slip clutch? The spline on the tractor is smaller that the pto on the mower. Do they make a bushing to size up?
Would there be a problem mowing without the slip clutch? Thanks for any info.

I replaced the smaller pto shaft in my 850 with the newer size 1-3/8" so now all the modern stuff just slips on. The replacement pto kit is available through NH dealers for about $120. It's an easy bolt on swap. Just unbolt the old shaft, pull it out, shove the new one in and bolt it back up. Oh yeah, drain the diff first. Some say if you park the front wheels in a ditch you don't have to drain it, but I prefer to work on my tractor in the shop rather than on a ditch bank. Might be time to change diff fluid anyway. All other replies to your question are valid as well.

Don't remove the slip clutch. This protects the machine and tractor drivelines from overload. If this is a telescoping PTO shaft, you can shorten it by pulling the telescoping section apart and trimming a bit off the ends of the square shaft and square tube. Make sure you put the shaft back together so the u-joint yokes are indexed properly. The shaft should look like a dog bone, with the yokes parallel to one another, rather than having them turned 90 degrees to one another.
Make sure that shortening the driveline won't cause excessive u-joint angles.
Yes, there is a bushing to go from tractor 1.125" to implement 1.375", they can be found at most farm machinery dealers or CT, Quality Farm and Fleet, Country General, etc.

If the mower is run with a vbelt, there would be no need for the slip clutch. The belt gives.

Does anyone make a hydraulic drive mower? Seems like it would be a lot safer
