I just got a Dain's Safety Corn Cutter that belonged be my grandpa and was wondering if anyone knew anything about them. It has a T2E patented Dain MFGC. Ottumwa IA cast into the steering framework.

It has a wooden bench type seat and wings on each side that drop down to cut the corn.

How old is it?

I pressure washed it this afternoon and the metal has a little green paint on it and the wood has some signs of red on the bottom side.

Thanks for any info
Mark

From what I can tell from a parts book dated Apr. 1951, the Dain Safety Four-Wheel Corn Cutter was made from 1896 to 1917. The top steering circle with T2E is shown from 1901 to 1917. I just found one of these but, it has only T2 cast in this circle and Carrollton, MO.

Dain moved his company from Carrollton to Ottumwa, IA around 1900.

My cutter has no wooden pieces left at all. In sandblasting, I've found only a trace of red paint on the steering circle, one front wheel and a few other smaller parts. Since Dain was bought by John Deere in late 1910, I figure that prior to this date it would not be in Deere colors but that's just a guess. Deere usually painted the main metal parts green and the wooden ones red.

I'm always looking for more informaiton on it if anyone has any. Good luck with your find.

Kevin

Hello Ralph, sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner. I would be happy to send you a copy of the parts book pages for this cutter. It gives dimensions of most of the wooden parts. I will try to get this in the mail in the next few days.

Dain became part of Deere and Company sometime around 1910 or 1912. Deere bought Dain for the hay equipement. The old 594 rakes from the 40's and 50's were direct descendants of the original Dain inclined frame rake. Dain's Ottumwa operations became Deere's hay equipment plant. I believe square balers and round balers are still manufactured there. Anyway, Deere had a corn binder in production around 1914, so I doubt they would have continued production of the corn cutter. My info may not be 100% accurate, but that's the best I can do for you.
