Picked up a 14T Baler in a package deal at a local garage sale this past weekend.Several questions...

What is a functional 14T worth? It hasn't been used in several years, but it is still green, everything still moves when the PTO is hooked up to it. Some pickup teeth have been robbed for the farmer's 24T baler, but I have been promised enough spares to put that part back together.

Anything to watch out for on maintenance and using it? Any typical problem areas?

How could one transport it a long distance over the road? I have access to trailers that will hold the weight, but it is a wee bit wider than allowed. Once I tune it up and prove it out I will need to move it 100 Miles or so to where it will be used. I will just drag it home behind a pickup truck to get it to my shop. That's only a few miles. Around here most bigger farms have gone to the round bales, but the horse people like the smal bales, as does my brother the great Alpaca farmer. ( Anyone want an overpriced Llama? )

Make sure the tires are good and pack the wheel bearings good and she'll pull OK. Make sure to remove the front section of the drive shaft or it could get bent in transit. It is held on with only one bolt on the shaft. The archieves at this site have a lot of good info on 14T and 24T. Good luck. HB

Well the first step ought to be to go to the Deere dealer and get an operators manual and parts book.

Then like others said, clean up the knotter and bale chamber as best you can and see if the tying cycle seems to work. The book will tell you all that. Getting a bunch of shear pins, especially for the flywheel is good advice. If you keep the plunger knife sharp and the windrows reasonable sized you'll need fewer of them.

Use fresh twine and be sure the twine guides don't have grooves worn in them. Get the knives sharp, especially the plunger knife. And try to get it aligned properly. Again, the book should tell you how to do that.

The 14T I had for several years cost me 225, and when I got it home I thought I'd made a mistake. But if I took my time it would work fine.

If I remember right the wheel bearings on it were roller type and towing with a pickup several miles was no problem. More than I can say for a NH66 I once fought.

I had no trouble selling it and a spare set of needles for 325 and probably could have gotten more.

get a manual for it first. make sure it is greased. make sure the knives in the bale chamber are sharp ,also the ones on the knotter too. buy plenty of shear pins for the flywheel, and hay feed auger. this baler was kind of sensitive to little things like too big of windrow, moisturein hay and humidity increase at dusk, i could set my watch by it !!lol i would not pay over $500.oo for one in excellent shape. too many improvements on the newer models to give much for one in my opinion. hope this helps

make sure your brake on the needles have propper tension on them. also when you bring the baler out from storage the first time . after winter spray the notters with WD40 it will help the notters work and clean rust off the notter quicker. my father and i purchased one 12 years a go . still working GREAT. most every thing you can still get from a Deere dealer .

I'm considering getting an old 14T (Serial # 52715) for our tractor club to "operate" on. Can the year be figured from this #? Thanks, Buz. Antique Tractor Club of Wills Point, Texas.
