HP to run round baler

Could anyone tell me how much HP it takes to run a round baler that makes 4X4 bales? A local dealer said that it takes 85 HP min. and to me this sounds like a lot for such a small machine. We were planning on running it with a 2640 JD, but it is rated at 70 HP. I am looking at a New Idea 4X4 baler. Thanks for your input, Bill

I run a 6x5 Gehl roller with 2640 JD.I have also pulled it with a 1020 JD gas about 40 hp.If I couldnt pull a 4x4 roller any type with a 70 Hp tractor I would have the tractor overhauled. You should'nt have any problem running a 4x4 with this tractor.

How do those roller balers work? I never got any replies on that when I asked a few months ago somewhere. Do they work on hay, alfalfa, cornstalks, what?

I bale with a NH 845 round baler. I used to use a Ford 5000, but have recently sold it due to mechanical trouble. This year I purchased a new JD 5105 and used it to bale with. So far it has worked well. The tractor has 40 HP, but most folks say it really doesn't take much to run the NH 845 chain type baler.

We run our NI 4x4 (sorry, can't remember the model #) with an 80 hp tractor. In most dry crops you can't tell the baler is there, but once in a while (only when baling cornstalks, so far) the tractor will begin to labor. 70 hp should get you by, but occasionally you may have to tie off a bale earlier than you had planned. I've never baled silage with ours, but I don't think 70 hp will handle that.

I run a JD 435 round baler (4X5) with a JD 2640. I also run it with a Case 970 (93pto). I run a 9ft Kuhn disc mower with the JD 2640. I do custom baling with these tractors plus a JD 2840. It seems to me that a 2640, in reasonably good condition, should handle a 4X4 round baler in most conditions I can think of.
