Brush hog questions revisited.

I'm preparing to purchase a new brush hog. I'm looking at either a JD or Bush Hog brand. I'll be using a JD 5105 40 HP tractor to pull it. I'm interested in a pull type unit. The dealers have told me that I can pull either an 8 foot or 10 foot model with my tractor. I'll be pasture clipping fescue, weeds, and an occasional small clump of multiflora rose thrown in for fun. I still have a 6 foot El Cheapo model for heavier cutting. I don't want to buy too much brush hog for my tractor, but I do want to cover my pastures as quickly as I can. Any opinions as to what the best choice would be?

Thanks for all the advice. Yesterday I purchased a new Bush Hog brand model 3008 pull type unit. It is an 8 foot unit. I felt this cutting width would work best with the HP I have available. The 8 foot unit was built heavier than the 10 foot model and the drive lines and gear boxes were much heavier. I like JD equipment A LOT, but the Bush Hog dealer offered his unit with a lift cylinder, cylinder stops for setting height, and safety chains for quite a bit less money. Based on the above I had to go with the Bush Hog. Thanks again for everyones input.

Sounds like you have light brush to cut through, but I'm a bit more concerned about overloading the engine. 8 to 10ft is a lot to cut with that low of a horsepower. The other thing to consider is how the rear deck is shaped; i.e. will it allow material to eject easliy and not plug up. Check the gear box ratings on each. Also consider the welds and bracing for strength. How easy will it be to service. What kind of clutch. If pull type will it use hydraulics or a ratchet for setting height. Most important of all, saftey! Are any shields, chains, or deflectors available for the unit. Jd and Bushhog are both equally good and I have run both but I prefer Bushhog. They are tough and will give many years of dependible service. Definitly avoid the cheap stuff as you really do get what you pay for!
Good luck and shop around!

Don't shred those rose bushes, put something on them to kill them. Let them sit for a full year after they are dead and them burn them. Cutting them only spreads them. Soon you'll have them all over.

Also, to help clarify my original question I'm interested in your opinions about if my tractor will pull the larger units, which cutting width would be better, and which brand do you feel is the best JD or Bush Hog? Thanks for your patience and your opinions.

No matter what size mower you use, the ground speed and pto rpm will determine your cut. If you get too big with the mower the tractor won't hold enough rpm's to cut, and if you use a smaller mower and travel too fast with it, it won't cut right either.

I think I'd just keep the blades sharp on my el-cheapo and run it, but if you want a new cutter anyways I would vote for the 8' JD.
