I plan on making a hay rack and am trying to remember how long to make it. I think they hold 8 rows of bales. Are bales 14" wide? Will 4x4's be big enough for the support beams or should I use 4x6's? Thanks for your comments.

We use 2 2x8 bolted together, one on each side for the main joists. Then 2x4 on edge every 12-16" for the deck joists, and the 1x8's for the flooring. The width, 8' is common, but we use 8'6" which is maximum legal width in MN for road use. Length varies from 12' to 20'. After we build them, we fix the bale length to best suit the wagons, for maximum load. 16' rack will carry 150-175 bale when stacked good. Best of luck to you.

Fudd I use a heavy duty two wheel trailer I pulled out of the timber for free.Put used tires on it (light truck type) and used 2X6 green treat and put an 8X12 bed on it. I can get 120 bales on it about 20 bales per layer and when I'm on the 5th or 6th layer it's not much higher than the first or second layer of a standard hay rack. Just a thought.Sure saves my back. My hay operation is stictly a one man operation. Dan in Iowa

Hi Fudd.I made two wagons in the last year.Thats because I bought a thrower for IH baler. We had always pushed hay onto the wagon till the help seemed to vanish over the years. We could get 150 regular sized bales on our wagons stacking them by hand.I think 23 bales to a row the first couple rows then taper in toward the top.But we did have a back rack. The wagons had 6 ton running gears. The 2 main wooden frames were 3x7's 16 foot. The floor was 2x4's on end at 2 foot centers and the floor was 1x8's 16 foot long (all rough hemlock painted with used motor oil). They were 8'x16' when finished. The racks are 2x4's 8 foot long, side boards should be at least 8" wide with 2 bolts in each upright for strength.I can get about 120 bales on with just the thrower. Hope this will help.

Thanks A.J. Those sound like some heavy duty hay racks. I pick the bales up off the ground so I want something low and I don't have that much so I think I will stay small.

mine is 7' by 14 ' that seems to be the standard around here. but mine is a little wider. 7' on the inside of the box but 14' long. i would go long on a wagon and just not stack so high. be a little more comfortable!

No, I need a hayrack to haul bales on. I think I have secured a light weight wagon gear and am trying to decide how long to make the hayrack. 10 tiers or 8 tiers, 10 being the standard I guess. Thanks for the info.

Oh I was thinking feed racks. DUH!!
I've got a factory rack trailer out back, I'll go measure it and see what it is exactly. I think it's 12'.

I was wrong on my length Fudd. This ones 14' on the floor by 8' wide on the floor.
It's got 2x3 square tube cross members on 30" centers, so I would think the 4X4's would be plenty heavy.

Fudd, do you know what load rating your running gear has? Don't want too big a rack on it. My steel thrower boxes are 8'x18'. 7'x16' is common on wood thrower boxes, as is 8'x16'. 8'x20' is also popular on new steel boxes.

Interesting aside. In this area, standard flat wagon width was 7' for years. Why? Almost all wagonhouses had 8' sliding doors. There's always a reason . . . .

I don't know what the rateing is but it is a light weight one. That is why I am thinking of making it shorter maybe 12 feet long.

Dad made ours to hold 8 rows of bales plus room to stand, which means we put 9 rows on of course. On old car front axles welded into a running gear, 6x6 beams tho, I'd be nervous using new wood 4x4, that's kinda weak.

My wagon floors are made of four sheets of 4x8 plywood. Ends up 8x16.
