Last year, I bought a IH55T baler that has the IH inline flat head four cylinder on it. The engine starts and runs great. I made some repairs to the govener, and repaired loose bushings through out, etc. This year I made a trial run of about 70 bales - had to retie about 12 of them. My question is this: Would it be practical to try to find a new knoter assembly or just find a newer baler? I am lacking recent experience in these things, and don't really know what to do. At my place of employment, I am able to make most any part, and have it heat treated. Again, I am lacking experince - I don't know what changes to the knoter will give what result. Any one out there run one of these that might share a few hints? Were these balers reliable when things were in "like new" condition, or were they usually troublesome? If they ran great new, I am tempted to make new knoter parts if necessary to restore it. I have more time to make parts than money to buy new ones if they are even available anymore. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mike, I would have to say give up on th IH baler. I come from a family that is die hard red, however we had on eIH baler on the farm. It lasted 2 seasons and then went for scrap iron. The IH knotter is different then JD and New Holland. Unfortunately it did not work well. When new, we could get 800 bales out of it, and then things went down hill from there. I don't know if it would be possible to swap the knotters with JD's, but could be one way of saving it. Sorry for the bad news.
