Dad tells me way back when they used wire balers that it was common practice to make a cow swallow a large magnet, so any stray wire or metal would cling to it, thus keeping it from going through the cows system. I find the story hard to swallow. Anyone else heard of this?

We used them here in Texas when we had a dairy. We gave them to the cows just like a wormer bolus except with the magnet we used a plastic bolus gun. There was a local slaughter house we visited from time to time. The man who ran it had a collection of things (horseshoe nails, bottle caps, etc.) that he had recovered along with the magnets from slaughtered cows.

Yep,the magnets are easy to get in(north end). But they are a lot of fun(haha) to get back out(south end).Maby you could tie a string to the magnet and pull it all the way though. BUD

We bought beef on the hoof and watched it dropped and field dressed. (Educational for the kids)

The slaughterman took two magnets out of the first stomache and he said they held metal there so they could disolve in the stomache acid rather than pass on and do damage to the cow's more tender 2nd stomache.

He gave them back to the farmer for re-use.

I didn't stop to notice if all his cows pointed North, though.

You have to float the cow in water to get the compass effect.

I guess a cow pointing the wrong way would indicate it ate the magnet backwards.

Them is Australian cows. The idea is to keep the cow facing away from the equator. Keeps their noses from getting sunburned.

That would explain why I kept getting the south 40 and the north 40 switched.

Mike - I have personally fed many heifers a magnet. All of the dairy operations use them here in Michigan. If the wire and other metal from feed procesing machinery passes the first stomach, it can kill them. This is refered to as "hardware disease". It's cheap insurance. The old magnets were solid - the new ones use several magnets seperated by 1/4" plastic, on a plastic rod - this gives more north and south poles, and attracts more hardware. Visit your local dairy farmer, and he might show you one. We bought them by the box full.

Yep! There really is such a thing and we sell them here at Master Magnetics in Castle Rock, CO. Not only do we make them for the cattle, but we also use them in educational kits!!

Yup. The recycled magnets are cheaper from the slaughter plants. This keeps nails & stuff on the magnet in the big stomach I believe, where it does the least damage.

They may be hard to swallow but were about three inches long and 3/4 inch diameter. Rounded over on both ends. Looked a lot like the plastic capsules you would take. Check with your local vet they are still available.I have saw those recovered and it is amazing how much metal was attached to them. AD

If you trash the tranny or final drive on gen II JD's put a cow magnet next to the sump screen to catch the left over pieces before it gets in the hydralic system.
