IH Sickle bar level adjustment...

Hello everyone,

I have just aquired an old IH 7' sickle bar mower, and would like some hints about setting it up.

Do I need to get the mower bar in a straight line with the Pitman rod? I can't seem to get everything to line up and be level, with the mower at a good height for cutting. I have a feeling that the chain at the back of the mower that connects to the rear of the top link might be something to do with this, but how?!

Many thanks,

J-P

...Hmm.. I've just realised that I don't have a problem, if it's supposed to scrape along the ground. That's it, isn't it?!

John-Paul, the cutter bar is supposed to ride on two adjustable "shoes", one on each end of the bar. I point that out because it might be better descibed than "scraping" along the ground.I have forgotten how to set the lead on that mower so the pitman runs in a straight line when you are mowing and have the pressure trying to push the bar back. You really need a manual, but maybe some others on this site will help. Also helpful is what model (#) is the machine? Hope this helps,
Tim

string a line paralell with the pitman bar to the end of the cutter bar and the distance from the string to the to the tip of the guard points at each end of the bar should be 1/4 inch ber foot longer at the pitman end , on a five foot bar roughly 11/4 inch . Ray

Thanks guys!

From what you say it seems as though the lead of my mower is OK. I didn't realise that you could adjust the height of the bar in that way. As it is now, the thing is set to cut to about 2". The model of the Sickle bar is S4, although that designation may be local: I believe that it was made in Sweden under licence from IH.

Many thanks

J-P
